Driving Question:
In college, is it better to live on campus or off campus?
1. Research the pros and cons of living on campus and off campus for college
students. Focus on the financial costs, but also include social costs, dietary costs,
lifestyle costs, etc. Consider:
Tuition and fees costs
Room costs
Food
Laundry
Utilities, cable TV, internet
Transportation costs and time
Social life
Rules and restrictions differences
Etc.

2. As part of your research, create a survey about living on campus or off campus, and
give it to at least 20 students on a college campus and at least 20 students not yet in
college. Write at least 8 questions for this survey and use the information you get as
part of your research for your paper.
3. Keep a research log (where you keep research details and sources). Keep a learning
log (keeping track of time spent on the project). Complete a final reflection at the end of
your project.
4. Create a thesis statement (opinion sentence) which answers your driving question.
5. Write a letter which answers your driving question and demonstrates what you
learned in your research. This letter can be addressed to your family, the director of
student housing at a college, a potential roommate, etc. Treat this as being a real letter
which would impact your college living situation. Include the information listed above.
6. Plan, create, and publicly present a detailed presentation that displays what you
learned in your research. Use some sort of visual displays to help you present
information. Answer your driving question. Include information from your survey, and the
considerations listed above
