Do the three readings focus on the Mallon read. What are the main issues in terms of tradition?
That Mallon brings up.

Talking about space in the pacific, the terminology.

Hauofa excerpts. From Our Sea of Islands he stresses the connections between places. (we speak of
the remoteness and isolation of the island, smallness). The smallness is somewhat a derogatory
term.

From The Ocean in Us the terms Polynesia (many islands- a triangle between NZ, Hawaii)- the term
comes from 1756 meaning the entire pacific. In 1830, Indonesia, Micronesia (the small islands)
smallness is quite a big issue (there are quite big islands there). Melanesia (the Black islands)
Categorised by the colour of their skin, they have embraced the term to turn them and empower
themselves.

Voyaging music and dance plays a big role.
