0. General
0.1. Introduction
Pegasus has been developed by DNV GL to support recording and assessment of
thickness measurement data. This can be done in two different ways: Either by entering
measurement data into tables (the so called Lite functionality) or by assigning thickness
measurements to an existing 3D model of the ship structure (the so called Full
functionality).
The program is protected by a license file which defines the scope of functionality. In
particular the availability of Lite and Full functionality is determined by the feature
releases of the license files.
The main features of Pegasus are:
Spreadsheet like tables, allowing easy data input and clear presentation of
measurements results.
Comparison of the measurement data against the specific maximum allowable
diminution of the respective structural part.
Dynamic hot spot list showing the most critical areas with respect to degree of
corrosion.
Generation of reports in the format required by IACS1.
XML based data format for exchange, storage and transfer of thickness
measurement data.
For the Lite functionality of Pegasus the measurement recording tables have been
designed to simplify input of data as much as possible. Furthermore their layout is similar
to the tables commonly used for TM reporting according to IACS.
The Full functionality of Pegasus offers assignment of readings to the structural parts of
the ship structure by user defined views of the 3D model. Subsequently a TM report
according to IACS1 can be generated automatically.
General
Removed assessment criteria I (to be investigated). In case of local corrosion
and critical assessment (substantial or to be renewed) readings can be
marked as local corrosion and will be reassessed with applicable corrosion
tolerance.
UTM providers may change thickness tolerances. Changes of standard tolerances
will be indicated in program and report (bold and italic font)
Statistical assessment of compartments according to Condition Assessment
Program (CAP) possible
Checklist for UTM providers included
Double compartment assignment (front and reverse side) possible for CAP
assessment.
Structural member template types defining corrosion diminutions can be
extended by sub types
User Interface
Hotspot and reading list filter revised for better usability
Sketches attached to tables can now be easily displayed within Pegasus.
Display of maximum diminution now also in percentage

0.5.5. Work Area
The work area is used to display different windows containing information of various
aspects of the ship or the thickness measurement campaign, see Figure 3. The following
sections describe how readings are entered into the tables or assigned to a 3D model,
how forms are filled in and how results are viewed and assessed.
0.5.6. Attachments
The list of attachments, see Figure 4, provides one or more documents related to the
ship, e.g. drawings, pictures, capacity plans. These documents will appear in the report
directly after the front page. Supported image file formats are: jpeg, png, emf, wmf, and
bmp.
All added documents can be exported to a user defined folder.
Note: Files added to the list are copied. Therefore any subsequent changes to those
files are not reflected in the generated report.
Under the General options tab (Figure 6) the auto save function can be enable or
disabled. If it is enabled an auto save interval can be defined. We recommend to enable
auto saving.
The option automatic check for updates on startup specifies whether the Pegasus
update server should be contacted to search for program updates on startup.

Figure 6: General Options
Some TM-tables can be preconfigured according to the size of the ship. For instance the
number of rows is known when the steel drawing of the ship is available (strake length in
the TM-1). The same holds true for cross sectional tables TM-2(i) and TM-2(ii), see
Figure 7.
For tables of type TM-1, the default number of plates in strake fore and aft from
amidships can be defined, see Figure 8. If the numbers to fore and aft end are different,
the maximum should be chosen. For example, setting this value to 5 will result in 11
rows, 5 forward, 1 mid ship, and 5 aft.
16 / 102
Figure 10: TM-2(ii) options
The behaviour of the table editing can be changed using the last two options.
Movement of the cursor on pressing the enter key can be switched by the last option.
The cursor can move top to bottom or left to right on pressing enter. When left to right
movement is chosen, the cursor moves into the next line when leaving the last editable
cell in a line.

bulk carriers applies
UR S31 Check, when IACS unified requirement 31 renewal criteria for side shell frames
in single side skin bulk carriers and single skin obo carriers not build in
accordance with ur s12 rev.1 or subsequent revisions applies
Date input:
The date format used throughout the application is yyyy-mm-dd according to ISO
8601. Dates can be entered either by setting each component numerically or by date
selection from a calendar, see Figure 14 and Figure 15 respectively, The calendar opens
when left-clicking the arrow on the right hand side of the date input field
22 / 102
Figure 17: List of predefined structural member types
Using the insert and remove line buttons of the local toolbar (see Figure 17: List of
predefined structural member types) allow creation and deletion of structural member
subtypes. The name of a subtype can be chosen arbitrarily, the diminution formula can
be defined by the following syntax:
Note: This feature is only available for DNV GL users having a special license file.
2.2. Compartments
For some kind of measurement campaigns, e.g. CAP and ESP, its necessary to provide a
statistics based on compartments - hence there is a need to assign readings to
compartments.
In case of table based recording using Lite functionality this requires a manual
assignment of readings to the related compartment(s) in the different measurement
tables TM-xx.
All compartment definitions are contained in a table accessible via the Compartments
menu provided by the General Data panel, see Figure 20. Previously defined
compartments can be edited or deleted while new compartments can be created directly
in the table.

Name (of Operator 1,..,3) Name of the person(s) taking the measurements
Note: In case of local corrosion the corrosion margin is set to 20% of the original
thickness as default. Depending on the type of corrosion, this local corrosion
margin can be overwritten as defined by the attending surveyor.
The necessary steps to establish the assignment for different table types are explained in
detail in the following sections.
Note: All values have to be entered with decimal delimiter according to country specific
local, i.e.. 10,5 in German and 10.5 in English.
Measurement assessment
For some measured values a rating symbol in the Diminution column A is shown. This
symbol is used to indicate a specific degree of corrosion or a warning that is related to
this measurement, for example a measured value that exceeds the original thickness or a
case where the maximum diminution cant be determined correctly, see Table 1.
Substantial corrosion
Substantial Corrosion is an extent of corrosion such that assessment of corrosion pattern indicates a
wastage in excess of 75% of the maximum allowable diminution, but within acceptable limits.
Structural part has to be replaced
In case of corrosion which exceeds the maximum allowable diminution the corresponding structural
part has to be renewed.
Measured value exceeds original thickness
28 / 102
3.1. Table Creation
Selecting TM-Tables from the project panel will open the menu for recording the
thickness measurements based on tables. The IACS3 compliant reporting tables can be
generated by the local toolbar of the Tables panel, see Figure 23. The different types TM-
1 to TM-7 are available according to the ship type.
A new created table opens immediately. Existing tables are listed in the table tree of the
measurement Table panel. They can be opened by a single or double left-click.
Note: For each table type, the tooltip specifies which structural members are supported
30 / 102
3.2.2. Reading Editing
For all table types except TM7S31 there is a set of basic functions available from the local
toolbar of that table.
Define favorite structural members to appear at first in the referring select list. If not edited, the
three most used structural members per table type appear at the top of this list.
Inserts a new line below recent cursor position, copy values from the row above and place the cursor
in the new row
Different values for original thickness can be specified on portside and starboard side. In this case,
two columns for Org. Thk. are needed. The button shows or hides the two respective columns for
original thickness. And maximum allowable diminution.
Hide and restore additional columns used to define and show the compartment to which a
measurement is related. The specification of compartments is optional except for CAP and ESP
measurement campaigns.
Create compartment
Cells can be selected either by keeping the left mouse button pressed while moving the
cursor across cells or by using the cursor keys while keeping the SHIFT-Button pressed.
Rows and columns can be selected by left clicking the marked area beside and above the
cells respectively, see Figure 27.
Figure 27: Selection of cells, rows and columns
Available selection commands are context dependent. They are provided by the Edit
Menu and by the context menu(right-click on the selection).

Pre-calculations are needed to set up the TM-7S31, furthermore the scope of the
measurements is specified by DNV GL. Hence prefilled tables of this type will only be
provided by DNV GL to the ship owner for every single ship prior to the measurements.
These tables must be used to guarantee a complete and consistent assessment.
TM-7S31 tables, see Figure 36, shall be used for recording of thickness measurements of
cargo hold transverse frames of bulk carriers under IACS UR S31.

4. TM-3D-Model
Performing 3D based measurement recording, i.e. using Pegasus Full functionality,
requires a model of the ship structure given in HCM format. This HCM format describes
the structural model in terms of plates and stiffeners with 3D shapes, properties and
affiliation to structural members and compartments4.
Total Model
Compartments
Structural Members
Assigning readings to this 3D model requires a graphical view displaying the structural
parts where thickness measurement shall be carried out. Within this view readings are
created by mouse click on the shown structural parts storing information about the
location of reading (3D coordinates) and the referring structural part with approved
thickness and maximum allowed diminution. Views can be arbitrarily created and stored
with Pegasus to allow specific measurement recording.

Overall View Cross Section View
Note: A view is just a utility allowing recording of readings independent from any
assessment or reporting requirements. I.e. a view can be deleted without any
impact on recorded readings, their assessment or report generation.
A cross section view showing the ship structure within a dedicated frame range or at an
exact frame position and can be created by the cross section view wizard in figure below.
The frame position resp. the frame range can be defined by the menu below.
Xmin Frame number defining the foremost x coordinate of the cross section. If checkbox not ticked, frame
number is set to the minimum frame number of the model.
Xmax Frame number defining the aftermost x coordinate of the cross section. If checkbox not ticked,
frame number is set to the maximum frame number of the model.
Note: Intermediate frame positions can be entered by <FrameNo> +/- <dx>, e.g. 72
+200 defining the position at 200mm in front of frame 72. If Xmin and Xmin are
set to the same frame number an exact cross section view (with zero x
extension) will be created.
A strake based view showing a longitudinal extended structural member can be created
by the strake view wizard in figure below.

The Structural Member filter list allows restraining structural parts to selected structural
members. The filter list has the following columns:
The Compartments and Structural Member filter list can be sorted by each column via
clicking on the column header. All items can be selected and deselected at once by a click
of the right mouse button at the filter list.

Note: Remember to select at least one Structural Member filter to create a view with
visible parts. The Compartments filter does not influence the visibility of the
structural members.
Note: The Bounding Box, Compartments and Structural Member filter lists are
interconnected. I.e. an activated bounding box filter restrains the compartment
and structural member filter list to those compartments and structural members
having structural parts lying in the active bounding box. An activated
compartment filter restrains the structural member filter list furthermore to
those structural members having structural parts belonging to the active
compartment(s).

4.2.1.6. Shortcuts
Pegasus provides the following keyboard shortcuts for the 3D model interaction:
Z Toggles a helper plane on/off that can be moved along the x-axis. The helper plane snaps
to frame or clip-range positions if available. Pressing <Shift> deactivates the snapping.
<Shift> Can be used to do some commands finely. E.g. pressing <Shift>+<Ctrl>+<Left> moves
the 3D model using a smaller step than <Ctrl>+<Left> alone.
W, A, S, D, E, X Moves the camera freely in the corresponding directions: forward, left, back, right, up,
down. Forward and back movements are available only in perspective view mode. The
velocity depends on the zoom value and may differ depending on the complexity of the
model and the power of the computer system. Moving directions can be combined.
Holding at least one of the keys you can use the mouse to change the direction of
movement by rotation of the camera.
F9 Move reading on structural part by drag and drop (press <CTRL> to move reading to
other structural part)
The order of views can be changed by moving a selected view via drag and drop up and
down. Furthermore folders can be used to better organize views.

4.2.4. Reading Editing
Once a view is created, a reading can be created on any displayed structural part by left
mouse click after activating the reading creation mode in the 3D toolbar (see section
4.2.1.2.) The created reading will be displayed as small icon on the structural part and as
new row in the view list showing the referring properties of the reading. Depending on
the kind and spatial orientation of the structural part, different shapes of icon will be
used:
Readings are created with an undefined measured thickness value, indicated with a white
coloured icon and value UNDEF in the referring cell in the view list. After a reading is
created, the focus will be changed from the graphic to this cell to facilitate measurement
value entering. If a thickness value is entered for the reading, the icon will be coloured
according to the following scheme:
Figure 56: Colouring scheme for reading icons and structural parts
Readings can be deleted either by selecting the referring row in the view list and pressing
the DEL key or by activating the reading deletion mode in the 3D toolbar (see section
4.2.1.2.) and selecting the reading to be deleted in the graphic.
Readings can be moved within the referring structural part by activating the reading
movement mode in the 3D toolbar (see section 4.2.1.2.), selecting the reading in the
graphic and move it by drag and drop to the new position. If the <CTRL> key is pressed
during this operation, the reading can also be moved to any other structural part in the
graphic.

5. Results
Selecting Results from the project panel provides access to different lists comprising
readings with a degree of corrosion beyond predefined limits as well as a compartment
based statistic, see Figure 57. These lists are dynamic, i.e. they are updated every time a
new reading is entered.
76 / 102
List columns
A Assessment
The local toolbar provides several options to filter the list of readings according to
different criteria.
Hide/show readings where the maximum allowable diminution cant be determined due to missing
org. thickness
Hide/show readings where the measured thickness is larger than org. thickness
5.2. Hotspots
The hotspots list collects readings that expose a degree of corrosion beyond predefined
limits, see Figure 59. Secondly, it also contains readings for which the current degree of
corrosion cannot be determined since the maximum allowable diminution cant be
determined.
78 / 102
List columns
The hotspots list can be sorted in ascending or descending order with respect to each
column by double clicking on the column header.
The local toolbar provides several options to filter the list of hot spots according the
different criteria.
Note: If the original thickness is smaller than the measured thickness, negative
diminutions values appear. Those entries must be considered with care.

5.4.1. ESP Location Definition
Depending on the ship type and survey cycle different locations and areas must by
inspected. The following locations and areas are supported:
The assignment table can be sorted with respect to a column by double clicking on the
column header. For instance all TM tables referring to a special frame can be easily
accessed by sorting the assignment table according to the frame number. Additionally
the assignment table can be filtered according to the ESP locations currently worked on.

compartments, the transverse sections for each frame and the automatically created ESP
locations Keel Plate, Bottom Shell Plating, Bilge Plating, Side Shell Plating, Sheerstrake,
Strength Deck Plating, Stringer Plating. For each compartment the referring ESP values
of transverse webs (and adjacent structural members), shell frames and transverse
bulkheads are listed (see Figure 63 ).
Figure 63: Maximum and average thickness diminution results for ESP areas
Placing the mouse pointer over a cell of the Areas column will display a summary of the
considered TM table as tooltip. Additionally the ESP output table can be filtered according
to the different ESP locations:

Hide / Show rows showing ESP values for the transverse webs (and adjacent structural
members)
Hide / Show rows showing ESP values for the shell frames
The distribution of all tables included in the project file according their types is shown on
the right hand side. Detailed information about the readings are summarized on the top
left hand side, see Figure 64. They are grouped according their degree of corrosion
(normal, substantial, renewal required) and suspect groups like Unknown (no maximum
allowable diminution available) and Negative (measured value exceeds original
thickness). Some general information like number of compartments and number of
available structural members and a file identification number (check sum) is shown as
well.
86 / 102
5.6. CAP Assessment
CAP assessment requires among other things a statistical assessment of the corrosion
condition of compartments. Pegasus Lite functionality helps to evaluate these statistical
values from the readings recorded in the thickness measurement tables. A prerequisite
for this assessment is that the readings are assigned to the related compartments (i.e. if
a reading is located on a structural part shared by two compartments it has to be
assigned to both compartments, otherwise to only to one compartment).
Note: This feature is only available for DNV GL users having a special license file.
Selecting a row in the table will display the degradation of the selected compartment by
different types of diagrams on three tabs:
Relative Diminution Distribution : Diagram showing percentage of readings over
percentage of diminution w.r.t. maximum allowed
diminution. Display of lines showing distribution for
Deck, Side, etc. can be disabled by local toolbar (see
Figure 66: Local Toolbar for CAP Assessment).
Absolute Diminution Distribution : Diagram showing percentage of readings over
percentage of diminution w.r.t. original thickness.
Display of lines showing distribution for Deck, Side,
etc. can be disabled by local toolbar (see Figure 66:
Local Toolbar for CAP Assessment).
Relative Diminution Histogram: Histogram showing number of readings for
different levels of diminutions w.r.t maximum allowed
diminution.
Each diagram can be exported in .jpg format (by context menu) or all diagrams at once
via the local toolbar (see Figure 66: Local Toolbar for CAP Assessment)

Figure 67).
92 / 102
In order to change the scope of the final report or to exclude all figures the save as
dialog provides the Options command to generate a user defined report. Figure 69
shows a sample scope selection dialog. It allows specifying which measurement tables
are to be included in the report. Specific tables can be excluded by unchecking the
according entries in the table. If figures shall not be included in the report uncheck the
include figures option
Note: Page numbers are not updated automatically. When using MS Word select the
whole document content by CTRL+A and update all field values F9 in order to
establish the correct page numbering.
Note: Report generation will be denied for vessels with ESP class notation or subjected
to the Condition Assessment Program (CAP) if not all readings are assigned to
a compartment.
6.1. Report Configuration
Preselected Frames for Frame numbers where TM-2(i) and TM-2(ii) should be created. Frame numbers
TM-2 has to be separated by ;. E.g. if Preselected Frames for TM-2 is set to
125;145 TM-2 will be created at frame 125 and frame 145 (if readings on
relevant structural members at these frames existing)
Min. Long. Ext. Tolerance Distance of minimum and maximum x-coordinate of a structural part defining if
it is classified as transversal or longitudinal structural part. E.g. a plate
extended from frame 100 to frame 100+500mm will be classified as
transversal structural part if Min. Long. Ext. is set to 600mm and will be
classified as longitudinal structural part if Min. Long. Ext. is set to 400mm.
Frame Selection Spacing around frame to assign readings to it. E.g. if Frame Selection
Tolerance Tolerance is set to 300mm and a reading to be reported in TM-3 is located at
frame 112 +200mm will appear in TM-3 table at frame 112.
Bulkhead Clustering Spacing around a transversal bulkhead to assign readings to it. Especially
Tolerance important for corrugated bulkheads where readings are not located on an exact
frame position in general.
