Synopsis of M. Tech Dissertation

This M. Tech dissertation aims to optimize cutting parameters in CNC turning of carbon steel C40. Experiments using a fractional factorial design of experiments were conducted on a CNC lathe. Genetic algorithm and response surface analysis were used to develop quadratic models relating material removal rate and surface roughness to spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. The models show material removal rate is maximized with higher spindle speed and feed rate and medium depth of cut, while surface roughness is minimized with lower spindle speed and feed rate and higher depth of cut.

Title: Determination of optimum cutting parameters in CNC turning using

design of experiments and optimization techniques

The study represents the optimization of cutting parameters for material removal
rate (MRR) and surface roughness (Ra) using Genetic algorithm in turning of carbon
steel C40. Experiments have been conducted using FCCD on CNC lathe and
Response surface analysis is employed to develop the quadratic models for output
responses. The results indicate that the maximum value of MRR is obtained at higher
level of spindle speed, higher level of feed and medium level of depth of cut, whereas
minimum value of Ra is obtained at lower level of spindle speed, lower level of feed
and higher level of depth of cut.
