Exercise: Semi-Colons and Colons

1. There are two main reasons for your disappointing performance this term, you have not
completed all your homework, assignments; and you have spent too much time dreaming during
lessons.

night film on television.

3. In order to visit his grandparents, Hari had to walk to the nearest bus stop, which was 800 metres
from his home; wait half an hour for the next bus, as he had just missed one; stand up on the
journey, as the bus was crowded; change to another equally crowded bus, and then walk for fifteen
minutes to their house.

4. Am I right in thinking that these were your actual words: I really cant be bothered to do my
science homework tonight?

5. In order to make pancakes you will need the following items: eggs, flour, water and milk.

6. Remember, it is important not to panic; when reading exam questions.

7. It was six oclock, in the morning; the sun was just beginning to rise.

Exercise 1: Samuel Pepyss diary

1. He thought it would be in the backside of Marke-lane at the farthest. Jane told them of a great fire
they saw in the City.

2. It was a huge and very bad fire

3. Some of the people stayed in their houses as long as they can, others running to boats or

nothing could stop the fire.

about.

3. Everyone looked-out for the bombs and guns that were firing and stayed indoors watching
everything that happened outside. Peter emerged from his lookout post in the front attic, Dussel
remained in the front office, Mrs van D. felt safest in the private office, Mr van Daan had been
watching from the loft, and those of us on the landing spread out to watch the columns of smoke
rising from the harbour.

4. She was scared of the sirens, which she lost her appetite the moment she heard it; an air-raid
warning, gunfires and swarms of planes. The thought of two air-raid alarms in one day! And also the
planes which dived and climbed that made the air drone of engines.

5. Ive learnt that Anne Frank was a strong girl, in every way; and that it was hard for her to build
her life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death. She saw things in a way others didnt intend
on seeing. She was also very positive that the world would somehow change for the better, that this
cruelty too will end and that peace and tranquillity will return once more.
