Seminar Pričuvni, Poč.

The document discusses the role of artists in society and how they are often isolated from others due to creating works that are incomprehensible to most people. It analyzes the Lady of Shalott as an allegorical figure representing an artist who lives alone weaving works that are only understood when reflected in a mirror. The document argues that while artists express themselves through their craft, they still have human needs for connection that cannot be ignored forever.

The world surrounding us has always been a place including different people with different

characters and roles in society. Unless we all behave according to the rules of our society, we
will not be accepted in it. Whoever differs, has to cope with living among unsympathetic
people and their disbelief. People usually treat cruelly what they do not understand and they
do not care about other people's necessities and destinies. So, what sacrifices must an artist
make with all the specific emotional needs? Does the isolation from the external and the
withdrawal to the interior world enable such a particular individual to give life to his art?
I believe the Lady of Shalott to be an alegorical figure which, among other simbologies,
represents an artist, who communicates with the rest of the world through his art. Having that
role of a simbol, she has no name in the poem, lives alone in her world of four walls, like the
four corners of the earth, all dull and grey. That world is incomprehensible, even frightening
for other, common people. So distant was the Lady to them, that they thought her a fairy and
they crossed themselves at the sight of her lifeless body come floating to Camelot, like some
kind of malediction. The fact that no one had ever seen her indicates that her way of living ,
her art, her essence is incomprehensible they can not see who she really is. She
communicates with the external world through a mirror which reflects the product of her
weaving. That is her only defective interaction with the real world out of wich, like many
artists, she takes inspiration from a distance and experinces it in her own artificial way. In the
interior world, she is lonely and only people passing by are mentioned. However, the Lady
becomes tired of her own world. This is a significant moment that shows the dualism of an
artist's personality, in which it is difficult to survive. Can a man live without other people?
Without sharing emotions? Without love? Not a single one can do that, because, even if an
artist, a human must be complete. All in all, the Lady of Shalott is nor a fairy, nor a wich, but
a woman who yearns, cries, laughs just like everyone else. People have different abilities,
needs, behaviour- but we all need the same, basic things. Without those, we break down.
Those are the links of a chain of life, that would fall apart without the most tiny, simple part.
An artist expresses himself through art- that is his function and his role in the world of
humans and in no other circumstances could he deal with the everyday life. But for this way
of expression, a part of this person would be dead and without function. The Lady of shalott
comes out of her artistic shell when she experiences the feeling of need for an another person,
the feeling of love- the human's primeval emotion, no one could ignore.
