Let's go Green!
your newsletter with updates on Green Impact

THIS MONTH: Dave is cycling again!

1
Congratulations, Dave!
Dave has been cycling to and from work, a journey of 11 miles! If you would like to follow Dave's
fine example, there are plenty of tips and helpful links below to guide you through cycling at the
University and travelling sustainably.

Travel Updates

Cycling

All cyclists at the University of Manchester are

strongly encouraged to join the University of
Manchester's Bicycle User Group. The group
brings together cyclists from UoM, MMU, RNCM,
MSP and Central Manchester University
Hospitals and provides all sorts of fantastic
benefits, including subsidised gear, bike marking
services, advice, support and free breakfasts!
Click here to to visit their website or send an
email to [email protected] to sign up for
the UMBUG newsletter.

We are currently working in a formal booking
process for the team's pool bike. The bike will be
free to use for all members of the team for
travelling around campus or even to and from
home. It is located in the Altrincham Street bike
shelter and all safety equipment and locks are
provided. More updates soon!

Travel Subsidies

The University, in it's commitment to sustainable

travel, offers a huge range of subsidies and
benefits for staff with the aim to reduce the cost
of travel. Danielle was able to save 5 a week on
her travel with this scheme!

These benefits include discount tickets, season

ticket loans, discount parking permits and much
more. Find out more here.

UMRUN

Another travel option is running! The number of

run commuters has tripled in the last two years
and there is a community of runners at the
University.

You can find more information here or subscribe

to the UMRUN newsletter by sending an email
to [email protected].

Daniele Atkinson's Green Actions

Attention, Drivers!
We would like encourage all the drivers in the team to consider a more environmentally-friendly for at least
one day in the work week. Being in Manchester, there are a huge range of options available (see above
for University subsidies and special offers).
Meanwhile, there are plenty of resources that can help reduce emissions and save on fuel costs. Here is
an eco-driving advice page from the AA and there is an article from the Department fro Transport here.

Coffee Cups and Food Containers

We are a large team with many of us visiting food and drink outlets throughout the working day. As we
were unfortunately unsuccessful in our 10,000 Actions Fund application, the responsibility lies with us to
make sure we reduce our waste with regards to food packaging. For this reason, we would like to
encourage everyone to bring any surplus tupperware and reusable drinks containers at home into the
office four either yourself or others to use.

4
Office milk
Following from the discussion in the team meeting earlier in the week, we will be looking into starting a
rota for office milk to reduce plastic waste and save money and fridge space. There will be a survey sent
out early next week for people to opt-in to the rota.
