Australia is in the South Pacific and its the worlds biggest island. We dont have any borders with other
countries and our closest neighbours are Papua New Guinea and East Timor. Australia is the sixth largest
country in the world. Its thirty times bigger than the United Kingdom, but nearly three times more people live
in the UK. In the centre of the country there is a lot of desert. Most Australians live near the coast, where the
countrys biggest cities are.
There are plenty of exciting cities to visit here, including Canberra, our capital, and Sydney, which is famous
for its Opera House and amazing harbour. However, it is Melbourne which is near the top of the list of the
most exciting cities of the world. It has wonderful beaches, a great nightlife, fantastic shops, and lots of arts
festivals and exhibitions.
Australia is a fascinating place to visit. Were very proud of our country and we usually welcome tourists. Our
way of life isnt very formal, but we often take presents when we visit people. If someone invites you to
dinner, its a good idea to take along flowers or wine for your host.
The good weather means we can do lots of outdoor activities. Summer lasts from December to February,
and winter from June to August. However, Australia is enormous and the weather isnt the same everywhere.
The north has two types of weather very wet and very dry! The centre stays dry all year round. But in the
south, the weather changes from season to season. Summer in the south is hot, but winter can be cold, wet,
and windy you can even go skiing in the mountains!
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are the three main meals. A lot of workers have a 10-minute break in the
morning (one name for this is elevenses) when they stop work to enjoy a cup of tea (or coffee) with a
biscuit. They have a similar break for a drink and a snack in the afternoon. Many hotels and restaurants in
England serve afternoon tea between 25 p.m. This is a light meal of tea, sandwiches, and cakes and its
very popular with shoppers and tourists.
Breakfast
A traditional full English breakfast is what many hotels serve to guests. It includes egg, bacon, sausage,
beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, and toast, with tea or coffee and it contains around 1,000 calories (women
need around 2,000 calories a day, and men need around 2,500). However, most people start their working
day with a piece of toast or some cereal some dont have anything at all.
Lunch
Lunch is between midday and 1.30 p.m., and in England people are more likely to have a smaller meal in the
middle of the day. For example, a sandwich and a packet of crisps, or a takeaway, which they can eat at
their desk. They often work while they eat. If its someones birthday, a group of people who work together
might go to a restaurant or a pub for lunch.
Dinner
Dinner (also called supper in the south of the country and tea in the north) is the biggest meal of the day
and we have it between 6 and 8 p.m. In the past, the traditional evening meal was meat and two veg
(vegetables) then a pudding, and, on Fridays, a lot of people ate fish. Today, many families enjoy a
traditional dinner on Sundays, but during the rest of the week we like to cook lots of different things, including
food from other countries. Indian food is now more popular in England than fish and chips. Around two
million of us go to Indian restaurants every week!

Tastes
After work I have dinner with my family. Sometimes we go out to parties or to the theatre, but most evenings
I prefer to relax at home and listen to jazz or read. My favourite author is Agatha Christie and at the moment
Im reading a book she wrote about her life. My cat usually sits next to me while I read, and the rest of the
family like to watch TV.
Places
One of my favourite places is Maine on the east coast. We have a small house near the beach. It isnt very
far from Vermont, where we go skiing in the winter. In the summer, we usually go to Venice where my wifes
family live. Its probably the most beautiful city Ive ever seen. I stayed in Venice when I wrote my third book
and thats where I learned to speak Italian and to play the guitar. I hope to buy a house there one day. Then
Id like to retire and learn to paint.

I was a news journalist until I was 60. I wanted to retire and have more time with my wife. Sadly, she died
five years ago and now Im alone in the house. Our son, Jamie, is a teacher in Morocco and last year I went
there for a holiday. I travelled to lots of countries when I worked, but this was my first trip to North Africa. I
really want to go back. Id like to travel into the Sahara and take photographs of the people and animals that
live there, but I need to learn a bit of Arabic first.

Nine months ago I retired from my job as a French teacher, sold my flat in London, and moved to a small
village. Its incredibly quiet after London, but my life is much busier now. Im decorating my new house and
Im learning to drive I never needed a car in London. I spend a lot of time in my garden, too. I enjoy
working in it and Im planning to grow vegetables next year and I also want to get some chickens. There are
sometimes problems, but luckily, my neighbours are really friendly.

Yesterday was my last day at work and now I can do what I want. After forty years as a cook, I need to lose a
few kilos, so Im going to learn to play golf. Im planning to do a computer course at the local college. Its a
good way to learn about computers and meet new people, and Id like to make some new friends. Id also
like to get a new computer so I can chat with my grandchildren on the internet every day they live in Dubai
and I dont see them very often.
