Tank Thickness Calculation

The document provides a sample calculation for determining the minimum thickness of an FRP tank with a diameter of 2100mm and height of 2300mm. It outlines the combination of FRP laminates needed to achieve a thickness of 10mm, and provides a formula for calculating the minimum thickness based on factors like the internal diameter, outer diameter, total effective pressure, and height of the shell. The minimum thickness calculated for this tank is 7.13mm.

Subject :- Sample thickness calculation of FRP Tank

Dear Sir,

Please find below sample thickness calculation of FRP Tank.

Tank size : Dia 2100 mm x 2300 mm

Calculation :

Assuming maximum (T) thickness: 10 mm

For getting the above thickness combination of FRP laminates as follows

300GSM CSM 2 nos : 300 x 2 = 0.6 Kg/m2

450GSM CSM 4 nos : 450 x 4 = 1.8 Kg/m2
600GSM WR 3 nos : 600 x 3 = 1.8 Kg/m2

Total Glass mass for 10 mm of FRP laminate = 4.2 Kg/m2 . Percentage of Glass approximate 40%

Formula : Xlam = X1 n1 + X2 n2 Xlam = Overall unit modulus in N/mm

= 16000 x 3 + 14000 x 6 X1 = Unit modulus of WR (Woven Roving)
= 48000 + 84000 X2 = Unit modulus of CSM (Chopped strand Mat)
= 132000 N/mm n1&n2 = Number of Layers

D = Internal Diameter = 2100 mm .

Do = Outer diameter = ( D + 2T ) = 2120 mm
0.40
To find Tmin =Do ( 0.4p F x L ) P = Total effective pressure in N/mm2
------- ---- F = Factor of safety
(Xlam x Do ) L = Height of Shell
-2
2120 ( 0.4 x 5x10 x 4 x 2300 )
------------------ --------
( 13200 x 2120 )

= 7.13 mm
