KNEMATICS OF MACHINES (NME 502)

Assignment No. 1
1. Define and explain with neat sketch:-
A. Resistant bodies
B. Types of constrained motions
C. Types of Links
D. Types of joints
E. Kinematic Pair
F. Kinematic chain
G. Mechanism
H. Inversion of Mechanism
I. Transmission angle
J. Mechanical advantage
2. What do you mean by degree of freedom? What is Kutzback's criterion for degree of freedom
of plane mechanisms? In what way Grubler's criterion is different from it?
3. Sketch and describe the four bar chain mechanism. Why it is considered to be the basic chain?
4. Explain Grashofs Law. What do you mean by the inversions of Grashofs Linkage?
5. Sketch slider crank chain and its various inversions, stating actual machines in which these are
used in practice.
6. Sketch and explain the inversions of a double slider crank chain.
7. Describe with neat sketches a quick return motion mechanism suitable for small slotting or
shaping machine. Show how the ratio of time taken on two strokes is determined.
8. Fig. (l) Shows four Link mechanisms in which the figures indicate the dimensions in standard
unit of length. Indicate the type of each mechanism whether crank rocker or double crank or double
rocker.

9. Differentiate between:-
A. Machine and Structure
B. Higher pairs and lower pairs
C. Machine and Mechanism
D. Kinematics and Dynamics
E. Analysis and synthesis of mechanisms
F. Whitworth quick return mechanism and crank and slotted-lever mechanism

11. Define the terms transmission angle and Mechanical advantage in context of mechanisms.
12. Explain elliptical trammels with neat sketch. Prove that the path traced by the mid-point of the
link connecting two sliders, is a circle.
