Ref Drawing 2. Ref Code: 3. Design Datas

The document analyzes the structural stability of a proposed chain link fence system. It presents calculations to check the stability of intermediate fence posts under wind loads, including moment and shear capacity. It also checks the bearing pressure and overturning resistance of proposed 450x450x600mm concrete footings. The analysis finds that the intermediate posts and footings are structurally sufficient, with safety factors above the required codes. Therefore, the proposed 2.0m high chain link fence system and its foundations are considered safe.

Following calculations are presented to check structural stability of proposed chain link mesh

fence system .

1. Ref Drawing :

2. Ref code : BS 5950-1:2000 Structural steel

: ASCE7-05 American code : Wind speed = 160 kmph = 44.4 m/s , exposure B

3. Design datas ; Wind speed 160 kmph = 44.44 m/s

Coeff of passive earth pressure kp = 3.33
unit wt of soil 19 kN/m3
SBC of soil = 100 kN/m2

Properties of various pipes :

Pipe OD Thickness Pipe ID C/S Area Z, weight

mm mm mm mm mm kg/m
48 3.7 40.6 515 5297 4.0

self wt of 50x50x3.55/4.75 coated thk chain link = 3.1 kg/m2

4. Analysis and Design of chain link mesh fence system:

The system consists of 60mm OD ,straining posts , 3.9 thk at every 69 m c/c.
and Intermediate post 48 mm dia,3.7mm thk pipes at 3 m c/c

Intermediate post is critical from design point of view and hence it is checked for wind load.

Height of fence = 2.0 m from ground

4.1 Consider forces on the base of the intermediate post.

Self wt of post = 4.0kg /m x 2.0m = 8.0 kg = 0.10 kN

self wt of chain link mesh = 3.1 kg/m x 3.0 x 2.75 = 25.6 kg = 0.26 kN
Other accessories = 10 kg 0.1 kN
Total 0.46 kN

4.2 Wind load calculation : ( As per ASCE7-05, for exposure B )

basic wind speed V = 160 kmph = 44.4 m/s ( max considered)

factors Kz = 0.57 upto 4.6 m (15') ht & exposure B,case 2 .. Table 6-3
Kzt = 1
I = 0.87 importance factor , category I .. Table 6-1

dynamic pressure q = 0.613 Kz.Kzt. V2.I N/m

= 0.613 x 0.57 x 1.0 x 44.4 x 0.87
2

= 599 N/m = 0.6 kN/m

shape factor Cf= 1.2

blockage due to chain link = 19 % ( 50x50 mesh, I.e.40 wires of 1 m length of 4.75 mm coated dia)
say 20% blockage = 40x1x0.00475= 0.19 m2 /m area)

wind load = Cf.q. projected area

0.32 kN/m

\ force on fence post = Cp.q. (0.2 x. Influence length + post dia ) 2m

= 1.2 x 0.6 x( 0.2 x 2.0 + 0.048)
= 0.32 kN/m
A
GL
moment at base = 0.32 x 2.02 / 2
point A = 0.64 kNm 0.6m

shear at base = 0.32x2.0 = 0.64 kN passive e.p.

Toe kp.g.h
\ design moment = 1.2 x 0.64 = 0.768kNm 0.40m x 0.40 m base = 3.33 x 19 x 0.6
\ design shear = 1.2 x 0.64 = 0.768kN footing = 38 kN/m

4.3 Moment capacity

Mc = 1.2 Py Z
= 1.2 x 275 x 5297 section modulus, Z= 5297 mm
= 1748132.348 Nmm
= 1.75 kNm > design moment
hence safe

4.4 Shear capacity

Fv = 0.6 py.( 0.9.A) A= steel area in c/s

= 0.6 x 275 x ( 0.9 x 515) = 515 mm
= 76430 N
= 76 kN > design shear hence safe
5. Check for foundation of chain link fence. ( Passive earth pressure design)

Fencing height= 2m
wind load = 0.32 kN/m

Resisting
Bearing moment Resisting moment
Footing size Depth Load P pr. Overturning moment Mo MR self MR EP Total MR FOS

0.45 0.6 3.50 17.3 1.02 0.79 1.02 1.81 1.77

total vertical load at bottom of footing =

post wt 0.10 kN
chain link wt 0.26 kN
Accessories 0.1 kN
footing wt 3.04 kN ( 0.45*0.45x 0.6 x 25)
total 3.50 kN

Base pressure due to vertical load = 2.86 /( 0.45 )

= 17.3 kN/m
< 100 kN/m2 hence safe

6. Check against overturning ( consider pivot point at toe )

Overturning moment at toe due to wind on fencing = 0.32x2.0x(2.0/2+0.6) = 1.02kNm

Total Mo= 1.02 kNm

Resisting moment MR= MR self wt + MR EP passive earth pressure

2
due to passive EP. = 3.2 x 0.4 / 2 + 3.33x 19x0.6x 0.4x 0.6 /6 = Kp.g.H
= 0.79 + 1.02 = 3.33 x 19 x0.6
= 1.81 kNm = 38 kN/m
\ MR > MO
\ F.O.S against overturning = MR / MO
= 1.81/ 1.02 =
1.77 > 1.5 as required by the code hence safe

7 . Conclusion:

* Proposed 2.0m high chain link fence system proposed in the Link Middle East drawing is Safe
* Proposed footing 450x450x600mm is safe
