Church Summer Fete Builds on Last Years Success

A lthough the weather was not quite as warm as last year there was a wonderful turn-
out for the fete which, as last year, was held on the village green and in the Church.
People enthusiastically took part in the games such as bowling for the pig, splat the
rat and chuck the duck. The numbers entering the dog show were up on last year and
many thanks to Gemma for coming to judge for us. Thank also to the Historical Society
for their displays in the Church featuring both the RAF Museum memories and a display
of current aerial views of our village taken by Denys Winners drone. The refreshments -
lunches and cakes - were, as always, delicious and very much enjoyed by many.
We raised the magnificent sum of 1,292. This, of course, would not have been possible
without all the generous donations of prizes, cakes and other items from the local com-
munity, all the help given on the day and also all who came. A huge thank you to you all.
The day was rounded off with music from Will Harman, James Blyth and their friends,
which was wonderful. Well done and thank you boys! Anna Burpitt

COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH NEEDS YOU!
Many of you will have seen the small band of our Community Speed Watch
volunteers. They record traffic going too fast and report the details to the Safety
Camera Team in Norwich. Those of us who have been caught speeding may have re-
ceived a letter giving the time, place and speed of the offence. The aim is to improve the
road safety in our village, particularly for our children but also for the rest of us.
We also monitor speeds of all traffic with our mobile sign. A survey was undertaken
from during April this year which yielded some worrying facts. Along Castle Acre Road
51% of vehicles were monitored going over 30 mph with 15% travelling over 38 mph.
Along Weasenham Road, 52% were recorded going over the speed limit with 8% in ex-
cess of 38 mph. The peak times for speeding traffic were around tea time when 70%
were recoded going above 30 mph. Every mile per hour over 30 mph increases the risk
of fatality involving a pedestrian.
Our lovely village should be a safe area for people to walk and children to play. Help
make us achieve this by joining the Community Speed Watch Team. Do your bit!
Please call me on 01485 520 307 and find out whats involved. Andrew Bickerton

Bowls, Tennis & Petanque

Unite A Perfect Combo!
On Sunday, 12th August members
from both the Bowls and Tennis
Clubs came together to have a
go at each others sport! Coach,
Jeremy Hodges got the tennis
going with a spot of Team Tennis
(6 a side), during which many
Bowls players showed great apti-
tude for the game and, whats
more, seemed to enjoy it!
The tennis players then went onto
the Bowls Green and, after some gentle and patient tuition, were let loose with the
woods! Again, many showed a natural aptitude for the game and became hooked! It
was then time to play a neutral sport, Petanque, beside the Bowls Pavilion. Both Bowls
and Tennis players proved equally good at the game and decided that the Village Hall
should definitely have a Petanque court.
The weather was perfect and a BBQ lunch gave everyone the opportunity to mix and get
to know each other and compare sheds! Many thanks to Peter Wadham and Annie Law-
ton for initiating this event which proved such a success that it is hoped it will become an
annual event. Ali Ward

Car Parking Causes Problems

The issue of cars parking on footpaths in the
village was raised at the Parish Council meet-
ing on 21st August.
Cars blocking or partially blocking footpaths
are a real problem for pedestrians, particular-
ly those with push chairs or walking aids. It
can be quite dangerous when people are
forced to avoid the offending vehicle by
walking into the road.
Parking on footpaths is also an offence. The
problem is of particular concern along Abbey
Road as is demonstrated by the picture.
Residents are asked to avoid obstructing our
footpaths when parking their cars. Cars parked properly on the road may inconvenience
other drivers but actually help to slow the traffic through our village.
Temporary no parking signs will be placed along the Abbey Road footpath which may be
replaced by permanent signs if proved successful. Andrew Bickerton

Village Hall News.. Submission for Sport England Grant Fails
Not great news this month, Im afraid. You may recall we are making a series of appli-
cations to various funding sources to improve facilities at The Hall. Our submission to
the Big Lottery Fund to refurbish the front of the Hall and especially the kitchen is still
being considered by the Lottery Funding Support Group. We understand that the decision
- making process is delayed due to the weight of submissions and the holiday season.
We expect a response from them in the early part of September.
Our Sport England application for funds to improve the sporting facilities at the Hall has
be unsuccessful. In truth, we knew this would always be a long shot since the fund which
was available to us was targeted at running sporting projects rather than funding capital
projects. It didnt help us that the fund was oversubscribed by a factor of five! We are,
however, undaunted and are already hatching plans for financial support from another
Lottery Fund to further enhance the sports facilities offered at the Village Hall.
At the time of writing the Trustees are finalising a grant submission to WREN (Waste
Recycling Environmental) to help fund the planned Hall Refurbishment. WREN is a not-
for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects
from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. We
are eligible to claim from them by being within ten miles of the Blackborough End land
fill site. WREN will provide funds to provide for fixtures and fittings but not for the
actual structure of any refurbishment we undertake. That is, money for windows, electri-
cal work, plumbing and so on. By the time you read this our submission will have been
submitted on 23rd August. However, once again, we cannot be complacent since compe-
tition for WREN funding is considerable. Requests for funding from the most recent
round of requests exceeded 6 million and they regularly decline worthwhile projects
due to funding restrictions.
Hopefully, next month we have some more positive news to tell you. Until then we are
constantly seeking other ways to improve the Hall so that it continues its vital roles for
our community. Philip Ward, of behalf of the Trustees.

Message To All Parishioners
Our villages & our churches
Our villages have a great and historic past, much of it centred on or around our parish
churches. Our glorious mediaeval buildings have been at the heart of village life for, in
some cases, a thousand years. As well as providing Sunday Services, people have relied
on our churches for Baptisms and Funerals, the joyful celebration of Weddings and to
mark great national events such as Remembrance Sunday.
Our congregations give generously to cover the costs of running and maintaining our
churches. Like all parish churches in our country, the local parish church receives no
money from the Church of England nor does it get any government or other public
funding - other than the tax recovered from Gift Aided donations and, in some parishes,
help from the local parish council towards the maintenance of our churchyards. We our-
selves have to find thousands of pounds each and every year to pay the bills so that our
churches can keep going and be available for all the people who live in our ten parishes.
Day-to-day running costs include:
maintaining the clergy presence within the parish
keeping the churches open for worship and accessible for visitors
keeping the church welcoming - clean, dry and (hopefully) warm
paying for the cost of insurance and electricity
maintaining the churchyard in good order
the general upkeep and maintenance of a listed ancient building
dealing with restoration and redecoration, often major projects.
initiatives in the community with young people, families and the elderly - such as:
Messy Church (Gayton), Holiday Club (Massingham), the OWLS - oldies who lunch
(Grimston) and weekly tea and cake sessions in Gt. Massingham.
The parish church is for everybody. We value its ongoing, vibrant, active presence in
our villages. The cost of its upkeep should not rest solely on those who worship there on
a Sunday.
We are therefore asking you to consider making a small monthly donation to your parish
church to preserve it for both present and future generations.
It is our great joy and privilege to serve all the people of our villages. We are deeply
committed to our shared ministry across our ten churches - and we are determined to
keep all our churches at the heart of village life.
With your help we can do this but only with your help.
We are mindful that many of you already do a great deal to serve our churches and com-
munities but if you feel able to give any financial support to your local church it really
will make all the difference. With our love and prayers, Revd Jane and Revd Judith.

The Derek Skipper Memorial Trophy Tournament
This years tournament took place on Massingham bowling green on the afternoon of
Saturday 29th July. It was a round robin event with
teams from Houghton and Rougham along with
Massingham A and B teams taking part. Around
forty people participated in what was a well contested
event with Massingham A being the eventual winners
and retaining the trophy for the second year running,
after winning all three of their matches.
Dereks widow, Lena, presented the trophy to Malcolm
Hipkin, leader of Team A, at the end of the event. It
was so good to see Lena again together with her three
daughters and family.
Many thanks to the bowls club members from all the
teams for supplying the food. A fantastic spread was
enjoyed by everyone.
It was very enjoyable and all the teams will again look
forward to this annual event next year. Malcolm Hipkin
