This Week

Language Arts: Weve been working on when to abandon a book, fiction vs. nonfiction
characteristics, and guidelines for Reading Workshop. Next week we will look at how to
check for understanding as you read, ways to solve unknown words, and using punctuation
to help understand the authors meaning. In writing we are working on generating lots of
ideas with various graphic organizers. Next week well work on writing simple & compound
sentences, topic sentences & indentation, and only using relevant details as we build our
paragraph.

Fundations: Weve been working on blends (sl, mp, tr - two letter each have their own
sound) and digraphs (ch, th, sh, wh, ck two letters make one sound). Weve learned how
to mark our closed syllable words and short vowel sounds. We plan to review these
concepts Tuesday and assess Wednesday. Unit 2 will focus on bonus letter spelling rules
(ff,ll,ss,zz), glues sounds (all, am, an, ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, unk), and the trick
words shall, pull, full, both, talk, and walk. It will also be a two week unit.

Math: Weve already hit a lot of topics! Weve worked on number lines, number
combinations to 10 and 20, doubles & halves, doubles plus or minus one, and several little
assessments. Next week we have some fun problems & investigations with several ways to
solve and multiple correct answers. We will also work further on subtraction. Our number
corner will be in full swing now that September is here, so that will hit patterns, calendar
skills, telling time, and making 20. We are really enjoying when we introduce games and
how we play teacher vs students! It is wonderful to have such great resources that make
math an enjoyable, exciting part of our day!
Social Studies/Science: Right now our focus in on our Social Studies standard on
government, rules/laws, and being a responsible citizen. Weve been working hard to build
a wonderful classroom community! When we start Science our focus will be the
atmosphere and weather. As we keep adding components to our day, well start having one
long block for Soc. St. & Science once a week, so we have time for projects and
explorations.

Curriculum Night Thanks to all who came to Curriculum Night! For those who couldnt
make it, I sent home a copy of the power point slides so you would know what we talked
about. If your child did not give them to you, check their backpack/take home folder.

Have a GREAT weekend!
