POWER SYSTEM OPERATION & CONTROL
(Effective from the admitted batch 200809)
Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks.
Answer all units choosing one question from each unit.
All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNIT-I
1. a) Explain the necessity of load flows in power systems. Give
the classification of buses in power systems 6
b) Distinguish between decoupled load flow and fast decoupled
load flow solutions 6
OR
2. A sample power system is shown in diagram. Determine V 2 and R R

R R R RP P
UNIT-III
5. A 50 Hz, 500 MVA, 400KV generator (including transformer)
is connected to a 400KV infinite bus bar through an interconnector.
The generator has H=2.5 MJ/MVA. Voltage behind transient
reactance is 420KV and supplies 460MW. The transfer reactance
between generator and bus bar under various conditions are:
Prefault = 0.5 pu; during fault = 1.0 pu; post fault = 0.75 pu
Calculate swing curve using T = 0.05 sec, with fault cleared ate
0.1 sec. The period of study is 0.2 seconds 12
OR
6. a) State and explain te steady state, transient and dynamic stability
of power system 6
b) Explain briefly various methods of improving steady state
stability 6
UNIT-IV
7. Draw the block diagram of proportional plus integral controller and
show the steady state frequency error is zero 12
OR
8. For a two area frequency control employing integral of area control
error, obtain an expression for steady values of change in frequency
for unit step disturbance in one of the two areas. Assume both areas
to be identical. Comment upon the stability of the system for
parameter values given below:
T SG =0.4s; T t =0.5s; T ps =20s; K ps =100; R=3; K i =1; b=0.425; a 12 =1;

UNIT-V
9. a) Explain in detail different types of compensators used in
reactive power compensation 8
b) Discuss the role of reactive power on voltage and voltage
regulation 4
OR
10. a) Write short note on SVC & STATCOM 6
b) Discuss the effect of voltage and frequency on load 6
