8.0 CAMTECH TOWARDS SKILLSET ENHANCEMENT

1. BACKGROUND

Centre for Advanced Maintenance Technology (CAMTECH) at Gwalior was

set up at a cost of Rs. 6.22 Cr. in 1987-88.
The Centre is spread over an area of 1,60,000 sq. meters. The total covered
area is 8089 sq. meters.
Centre started functioning from November 1989.

2. OBJECTIVE

The centre is responsible for upgrading maintenance technology on Indian

Railways. The centres objective is as follows:

"To upgrade maintenance technologies and methodologies and achieve

improvements in productivity and performance of all railway assets and
manpower which inter alia would cover reliability, availability for use,
utilization and efficiency".

3. ORGANIZATION SETUP

The centre is headed by Executive Director in SA Grade who reports to

DG/RDSO. Each technical wing i.e. Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and S&T has
one Director in selection Grade assisted by SSEs.

4. ACTIVITIES AND METHODOLOGY

Development of maintenance manuals, handbooks, reports, pamphlets etc.

on important subjects.
Development of video films on maintenance of railway assets.
Imparting training through seminars on maintenance of railway assets (Skill
Development) followed by issue of publication.
Development of guidelines for infrastructure (facilities and layout)
requirements for maintaining railway assets.

5. SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Equipment specific workshops, seminars and training courses to

disseminate the knowledge to improve the skills of field staff and to upgrade
the maintenance technology in field units.
A large number of officers, supervisors and artisans have been benefitted
from such courses.
