EE 220 - Signals, Systems and Networks Tutorial - 2

This document discusses properties of signals and systems. It contains 3 questions: 1. The derivative of a periodic signal can be expressed as a linear combination of impulse trains. The values are determined to be A1 = 1, t1 = 0, A2 = -2, t2 = 1. 2. A system with input x(t) and output y(t) = x(sin(t)) is shown to be causal but neither linear nor time-invariant. 3. It is shown that if the input to a time-invariant system is periodic, the output will also be periodic, both in continuous and discrete time. An example is given of a time-invariant system where

Tutorial - 2

1. Consider a periodic signal (

1, 0t1
x(t) =
-2, 1<t<2
with period T = 2. The derivative of this signal is related to the impulse train

X
g(t) = (t 2k)
k=

with period T = 2. It can be shown that

dx(t)
= A1 g(t t1 ) + A2 g(t t2 )
dt
Determine the values of A1 , t1 , A2 , t2 .

2. Consider a continuous-time system with input x(t) and output y(t) related by

y(t) = x(sin(t))

(a) Is this system causal?

(b) Is this system linear?
(c) Is this system time-invariant?
3. (a) Consider a time-invariant system with input x(t) and output y(t). Show that if x(t) is periodic
with period T , then so is y(t).Show that analogous result also holds in discrete time.
(b) Give an example of a time-invariant system and non-periodic input signal x(t) such that corre-
sponding output y(t) is periodic.
