Procedure For Laboratory Test SOUNDNESS (By Use of Sodium Sulphate)

This document outlines the procedure for conducting a sodium sulfate soundness test on aggregates. Key steps include: 1) Washing, drying, and sieving an aggregate sample into different size fractions. 2) Creating a 20% sodium sulfate solution by dissolving anhydrous sodium sulfate in water. 3) Immersing the aggregate samples in the solution for 16-18 hours at 23±2°C, then draining and drying them. 4) Repeating the immersion and drying cycle 5 times total. 5) After the final cycle, washing the samples free of sulfate, drying again, and determining mass loss through sieving.

PROCEDURE FOR LABORATORY TEST

SOUNDNESS (by use of Sodium Sulphate)

1. SCOPE
This procedure is describes determination of the resistence to disintregation by
solution of sodium sulphate, if furnishes information helpful in judging the
soundness of aggregate subject to weathering action, particularly when adequate
information is not available from service records of the material exposed to actual
weathering condition

2. FLOW CHART

3. TEST APPARATUS
Balance and weight
Oven, drying
Sieve, test sieved required
Container wire mesh
Bat- constants temperature
Thermometer

4. PROCEDURAL TEXT

4.1. Preparation of test sample, thoroughly wash the sample of coarse or fine
aggregate dry it to constant mass at 105 110 degree celcius, and separated at
into the different sizes shown above by sieving to refusal. Measure out the
proper mass of test portion and place the test portions in separate containers for
the test.
4.2. Composition of test (Sodium sulphate) solution, the test solution shall be a
20 percent solution at sodium sulphate made by dissolving anhydras sodium
sulphate or the decahydrate in water
4.3. Preparation of test (Sodium Sulphate) solution, dissolve sodium sulphate
in clear top water in the proportion of 215 g of the anhydrous salt,
or 450 g of the decahydraus, per liter af water, heating and stirring the liquit to
effect solution, when all the salt dissolved, cool the solution to 23 2degree
celcius for less 24 h. At the end of this period the density of the
solution should be between 1.155 g/ml and 1.170 g/ml.
4.4. Storage of sample in solution, immerse the sample in the batch, in the
prepared solution of sodium sulphate for not less than 16 nor more than 18 h, in
such a manner that the solution cover them to a depth of at less 15 mm, cover the
container to reduce evaporation and prevent handling or the accidental addition
of extruneus substances. Maintain the sample immersed in the solution at a
temperature of 232 degree celcius for immersion period.
4.5. Drying sample after immersion at the end of the immersiom
period removed the aggregate sample from the solution and permit
it to drain for 15 5 min. Place in the drying oven in which the
temperarature has been previously brought to 105 110 degree
celcius, and dry it to constant mass.
4.6. Number of cycles, after the sample has been dried to constant
mass, allow at to cool an return it to the prepared solution as
described in clouse 4.4, repeat the process of alternative immersion
and drying until five cycle have been completed.
4.7. Washing, after the completion of the final cycle and after the
sample has cooled, was the sample free from sodium sulphate as
determined by the reaction of the wash water with bariumcloride.
4.8. Drying, after the sodium sulphate has been removed, drying
each fraction of the sample to constant mass at 105 110 degree
celcius, cool it and determine its mass, sieve the coarse aggregate
over the sieve swon below for the appropriate size of particle.
