Elements of Spiral Curve

Spiral curves are used to transition between tangent sections and circular curves on roads. They gradually change the curvature and superelevation. A spiral curve has three sections: tangent to spiral, spiral to curve, and curve to spiral. Key elements include the spiral length, offset distances, spiral and deflection angles, and degrees of curvature. Formulas are used to calculate offsets, angles, and speeds based on the curve radius, spiral length, and other parameters. Unsymmetrical vertical curves connect grades of different magnitudes, with formulas to calculate the summit position, elevation, and other values.

Spiral Curve

Spirals are used to overcome the abrupt change in curvature and superelevation that
occurs between tangent and circular curve. The spiral curve is used to gradually change
the curvature and superelevation of the road, thus called transition curve.
