Polyethylene is a polymer with ethylene as its monomer. There are several types of polyethylene including high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). LDPE has a high degree of branching and is produced via free radical polymerization, while HDPE has little branching and is produced via Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysts. The free radical polymerization of ethylene to produce LDPE was first developed in the 1930s, while Ziegler-Natta catalysts allowed the production of HDPE in the 1950s and metallocene catalysts provided improved control of polymer structure in the 1970s.
