ofthefirstthingsthathappensafterspinalcordtraumaisthat
areductionofoxygenandbloodflowsetsin,inasmuchasthe
bloodvesselsconstrictorshutdown...Withoutsometreatment,
thetissueswells.Eventually,thisleadstoparalysis.Ina
cerebralstroke,theanimalwilleitherbecomecomatoseor
lethargicordie.WithDMSOinfusionimmediatelyafterinjury
(orstroke)allthisisprevented.

ThirtyminutesaftergivingDMSOI.V.,thereisanincreasein
theflowofcortisone,anaturalbodysubstancewhichhelpsfight
offeffectsoftrauma,eventhoughtheanimalbeingtestedhad
alreadystoppedsecretingcortisone.

DMSOcrossesthebloodbrainbarrier,entersthebrain,picks
upwaterfromaninjury,andrushesitoutofthesystem,thus
relievingintracranialpressure.

Inanimaltests,theanimalsarebroughttoapointwherethe
electroencephalogramreadingbecomesflat,justpreceding
braindeath...TenminutesafterinjectionofDMSO,the

again.

Dr.Walkeradds,"DMSOtendstoprotectnervecells...following
injury.Itprovidesbetterprotectionthananyothertreatments.
Scientistshaveverifiedthisbyobservationwiththeelectron
microscopeandthelightmicroscope.ThusDMSOpreventsthe
paralysisthatmayensuefollowingtraumaitaltersthesevere
effectsseenafterabrainstroke".

Drs.JacobanddelaTonebelievethatDMSOisthetreatment
ofchoiceinstrokesandnotethatdelaTorre'sworkhasbeen
confirmedbyatleastthreedifferentgroupsofinvestigatorsin
otherpartsofthecountry.Theyalsobelievethatthe
combinationofDMSOwithfructosedisphosphateshouldbethe
treatmentofchoiceinspinalcordandclosedheadinjuries,
wherethefructosediphosphateprovidesenergytohelprestore
damagedtissue.

DreadedAlzheimer'sdiseasewillalsobeanotherarea,they
expect,wherethecombinationofDMSOandfructose
diphosphate(patentedbyDr.DeLaTorre)willbecomethe
treatmentofchoice,thefructosediphosphatebeingcarried
acrossthebloodbrainbarrierbytheDMSOtohelprestore
energytoadeterioratingbrain.

Inexperimentswithrats,Dr.delaTorrehascombinedLdopa
withDMSO,whichcarriestheLdopaacrossthebloodbrain
barrierintothebrainwhereitbecomesdopamineandturnsoff
thepartofthebrainwhichcausesthetremblingandother
symptomsofParkinson's.

WhilestrokesarethethirdlargestkillerintheUS,heartattacks
killthemostpeopleabout3/4ofamillionperyear.
RememberingDMSO'sabilitytodilatebloodvesselsand
improvebloodflow,itisnotsurprisingthatSouthAmerican
researchindicatesthatDMSOiseffectiveinheartattacksand
anginapromptuseofitinheartattackshasbeencreditedwith
preventingdamagetoheartmuscle.Reportingthisinhisbook,
Dr.MortonWalkersays,"Thereisacryingneedforresearchon
theuseofmassivedosesofDMSO(2gramsperkilogramof
bodyweight)inthetreatmentofheartattacks".

IfDMSOisthatgood,thenwhereisit?Whycan'twegetit?
Whyisn'titused?Thatisanotherstory,andasadonewhen
onethinksofthesufferingthatcouldhavebeenrelievedor
avoidedifresearchinDMSOhadnotbeenstifledbytheFDA.
Butthisstoryisn'toveryet.DMSO,inadditiontobeingavery
safeandeffectivenontoxicdrug,isalsoacommercialsolvent
usedinmanyindustrialprocesses.UnlikeKoch,Rife,or
Krebiozen,itcannotbestampedoutsinceitcaneasilybe
boughtinmanyhardwarestores.EveryoneinvolvedinDMSO
researchisupsetatprivateuseofcommercialgradeDMSOfor
anymedicalpurpose,andwithgoodreasonsinceitcontains

impurities.However,peoplesufferingfromarthritisorother
painshavetakenmattersintotheirownhands.Thereisalarge
undergroundmarketinthesubstance,andpharmaceutical
gradecanfrequentlybefound,notsoldforhealingpurposes,of
course.Cuttinginhalforlessthetimetohealsprains,many
athletescountonit.It'slegalforveterinarianstouseindogs,
cats,andhorses.

Itshouldhavebeenotherwise.DMSOshouldbeaprescription
drugavailabletodoctorsforgeneraluse,asitisinEurope.
Instead,itisapprovedbytheFDAforuseinhumansinjust
oneraredisease,apainfulbladderconditioncalledinterstitial
cystitis.ThehealthusesofDMSOmakeitoneofthemost
versatilesubstanceseverfoundawonderdrugindeed.Itwas
discoveredin1866byRussianscientistDrAlexanderSaytzeff,
whonotedinapaperhepublishedinaGermanmedicaljournal
thefollowingyearthatitwoulddissolvevirtuallyanything
combinedwithit.

Enteringthebodyeitherpaintedontheskin,takenorally,or
viaI.V.,DMSOrapidlypenetratesthecellsandcleansthemof
toxins,adesirablemechanismwhichmayexplainmuchofits
versatility.

AthletesstillknowaboutDMSO.JuneJones,oncequarterback
andlatercoachoftheAtlantaFalconsprofootballteam,knows
ofDMSO.Hiscareeralmostdidn'thappen,hetoldtheHouseof
RepresentativesCommitteeonAgingin1980,whichwas
investigatingwhytheFDAwasstilltellingpeoplethatDMSO
wasdangerous.Withabursitiscalcificationinhisright
shoulder,hecouldhardlylifthisarm,letalonethrowafootball.
FromOregon,hewasawareofDMSOandofDr.StanleyJacob,
andhadusedDMSOforsprains,likethousandsofothers.Sohe
wenttoDr.Jacob,whogavehimashotofDMSOinthe
shoulderandtoldhimthatthecalcificationmightdisappearif
heusedDMSQfor30daysstraight.Hefollowedinstructions
anditdiddisappear.TheFDAstillhasnotapprovedDMSOfor
sportsmedicine.

FormerOregonGovernorTomMcCallknowsaboutDMSO.
Strickensuddenlybybursitisin1963,twodaubingsofDMSO
onhisshoulderputanendtotheproblemastheDMSO
dissolvedthecalcificationthatcausedthepainfulcondition.

Abyproductofwoodpulpproduction,this"treejuice"asthe
latePatMcGradycalledit,helpssomanyhumanproblemsthat
oneisremindedoftheBookofGenesis,whereGodsaidthatHe
hadplacedontheEarthsomethingforeveryhumancondition.
Ittakesusawhiletofiguresomeofthemout,andtheneven
longertoclearawaythemanmadeobstaclestotheiruse.

In1960,RobertHerschler,chemistandchiefofresearchat
CrownZellerbach,ahugepaperandpulpmanufacturernear
Portland,foundaninexpensivewaytoproduceDMSOasa

byproductofthepulpindustry.Henotedthatthechemicalhad
aremarkableabilitytopenetratetheskinandspread
throughoutthebodyveryquickly.Byitselfnottoxic,Herschler
learnedthatwhenDMSOisputtogetherwithsomethingtoxic,
therecanbeproblemsifthecombinationisputontheskinor
ingested.SinceDMSOisasolvent,heandanassistant
regularlywashedtheirhandsinituntilthedayhedidsoafter
havinghandledpesticidesandbecamequitesick.

Tothisday,aftermanyhundredsofthousands,probablyeven
millionsofpeoplehavebeentreatedwithDMSOandthousands
ofstudieshavebeendone,thisistheonlydangerassociated
withDMSO,bewareofwhatyoumixitwith.

RealizingtherecouldbemedicalpossibilitiesinDMSO,in1961
Herschlergotpermissionfromhissuperiorstocheckwiththe
UniversityofOregonMedicalSchoolinPortland,andwas
introducedtoStanleyJacob.Themeetingmademedical
history.Dr.StanleyJacob,brilliantgraduate(insurgery)of
HarvardMedicalSchoolandprofessorofsurgeryonthefaculty
oftheUniversityofOregonMedicalSchool,hadpublished40
papersinprestigiousmedicaljournalsbeforeheheardof
DMSO.Holderofnumerousacademicandprofessionalhonors,
hewasalreadyapioneer.Hearttransplantswerestillthestuff
ofsciencefictionin1961,buteventhenJacobandhis
associatesweregettingpuppyheartstobeatinmaturedogsfor
severaldays,andhewaslookingforwaystopreservethem.He
founditinDMSO,whichisnowusedworldwideforstorageof
organtransplants.

AfterhearingaboutDMSOfromRobertHerschler,Jacobpainted
someonhisarmandwithinmomentsbecameawareofits
oysterishtasteinhismouth.Heknewthatthismeantthatthe
substancehadnotonlyquicklypenetratedhisskinbutthatit
hadgoneintohisbloodstreamandpermeatedhisentire
system.Herealizedthatthiscouldmeananentirelynew
medicalprinciplefordeliveringmedicines.AsPatMcGradyput
it,DMSO"wastochangeStanleyJacob'slifeandwhathe
learnedaboutitwastochangethelivesofmanyothersandhad
thecapacitytochangemanymore".

Dr.JacobandHerschlerdevisednumerousexperiments,one
showingthatmicewhichhadsustainedburnsweremore
comfortableafterbeingdaubedwithDMSO.Herschlersoon
profitedfromthisknowledge.Afteranaccidentalchemicalburn
onhishands,arms,andforehead,hecalledJacob."Apply
DMSOononesideandseewhathappens",Jacobtoldhim.
Herschlercalledhimbackin15minutes,"Thepainstopped.
NowI'mgoingtodotheotherside".Afewweekslater,oneof
Herschler'sassistantssprainedanankle.In15minutesafter
DMSOwasapplied,thepainwasgoneandin30minutesthe
swellingaswell.

SomeonecomplainedtoDr.Jacobofasplittingheadacheand

gavehimpermissiontoapplysomeDMSOafterhearingofits
capabilities.Theheadachewasgoneinminutes,camebackin
fourhours,andleftforgoodafterDMSOwasappliedasecond
time.Usedforonepurpose,sometimesitdidanotherputona
coldsore,withinafewhoursitclearedupawoman'ssinusitis.
AwomanwhohadhadastrokefoundafterDMSOwaspainted
onherpainfuljawthatshecouldnowwritewithherparalyzed
handandcouldwalkbetter.Dr.Jacobfoundthatitcouldalso
suppressinflammation.

Thetreejuiceworkedintrees,too.Witheredoldappletrees
becameyouthfulandfullofleavesafterDMSOwasinjected
underthebark.

ApplyingDMSOwhereithurttoasixyearoldwastedfrom
rheumatoidarthritis,inahalfhourthechildcouldmoveher
shoulderandturnherheadforthefirsttimeintwoyears.
Persuadedtotrywalking,shemanagedafewstepsandthen
burstintotears."Whyareyoucrying?"DrJacobaskedher.
"Becauseitdoesn'thurtanymore",shereplied.

DMSOwasverycheap,HerschlertoldJacob."Icouldpipeit
downhere.Youcouldhaveitbythebarrelorthetank!"

Impressedwithwhathewasseeingbutwantingsomeone
skepticaltoplaydevil'sadvocate,Dr.JacobsoughtoutDr.
EdwardRosenbaum,aphysicianinprivatepracticeinPortland.
Rosenbaumdidnotpaymuchattentionuntilapatientwith
severebursitisstartedlaughing,proclaiminghispaingone15
minutesafterhisshoulderwaspaintedwithDMSO.Another
colleaguepoopooedDMSOuntilafteroneofhisbursititis
patientshadrecoveredviathechemical.Hethendeclaredthat
obviouslythecasemusthavebeenmisdiagnosedandaskedif
heshouldbuysomestockinCrownZellerbach(whichproduced
DMSO).

In1963,Dr.JacobandRobertHerschlersubmittedtwopapers
onDMSOtomedicaljournals.Beforethearticleswere
published,thepressbroketheDMSOstoryonDecember10,
1963whenCrownZellerbachandtheUniversityofOregonfiled
atthestatecapitalacontractinwhichtheybecamepartnersin
thepatentedusesofDMSO.Thepatentswererequestedinthe
namesofHerschlerandJacobandspelledoutthemajorresults
seenfromDMSOresearch,sothenewswasnowpublic.On
December18,theNewYorkTimescarriedthestoryonitsfront
pageandCrownZellerbach'sstockjumped10%.

TheJanuaryandMarch1964issuesofNorthwestMedicine
publishedarticlesbyJacobandRosenbaumonbursitisand
arthritis.ThisgavesomelegitimizationtoDMSOinscientific
circlesbutstirredupanimosityaswellamongthosewho
resentedhearingaboutDMSOfirstinthepopularpress.When
JacobpresentedhisworktotheUniversityofOregonMedical
Schoolfaculty,therewereafewjeersof"liar,charlatan,quack".

Itwashardformanytobelievethatsomethingasversatileas
DMSOcouldexist.Dr.Jacobsentamemodescribing20ofhis
casestohisimmediatesuperiorandfriend,whorepliedwitha
notesaying"ThissmacksofAndrewIvy!"Afewmonthslater,
thesamefriendtoldJacobthathehaddreamedtheprevious
nightthattheDMSOaffairhadbeenturnedovertothe
NationalAcademyofSciences.ThenStanJacobremembered
hisfather'sdream.Aweekbeforehedied,hisfathersaidhe
haddreamedthatStanwouldfindsomewonderfulchemical
fromwood,andpeopleallovertheworldwouldbeholdingout
theirhandsforit!

Thatdreamwascomingtrue.Itwouldbeeightyearsbeforehis
colleague'sdreamcametrue,andalotoffurwouldflybefore
then.

In1965Merck,Syntex,andSquibbPharmaceuticalall
submittedNewDrugApplications(NDA's)totheFDA,stating
thatDMSOwasreadytobeaprescriptiondrug.TheFDA
turnedallofthemdown.InJuly1965,thefirstinternational
symposiumonDMSOwasheldinBerlin.

WhathappenedtoDMSO(andKrebiozenbeforeit)ishardto
understandwithoutrecallingthecrisisatmosphereintheearly
1960'ssurroundingthesleepingmedicationthalidomide.The
requestforapprovalofthedrugwasassignedtoDr.Frances
Kelsey,ChiefoftheInvestigationalDrugBranch.Sheprocessed
theapplicationbydoingnothingatallwithitforabouttwo
years.DuringthattimeanumberofbabieswereborninEurope
withoutarmsorotherlimbsandthecausewastracedbackto
thalidomide.SinceDr.Kelseyhadnotprocessedtheapplication
andthus"saved"Americansfromthedrug,shegotamedal
fromPresidentKennedy,(Thetruth,Dr.MortonWalkertellsin
DMSO,Nature'sHealer,wassomewhatdifferent:1,200doctors
intheU.S.hadaccesstothalidomidethroughtheFDAand
therewerethalidomidebabiesintheU.S.Somewerechildren
ofdoctors.)

AfterDr.Kelseywashonored,everyotherFDAbureaucratwas
onthelookoutforwaystoshowvigilanceandforthingstostop.
OnFebruary8,1981,RobertHerschlerappearedonDavid
Hartmann'sGoodMorningAmericashowandtoldhishost
aboutDMSO'sreceptionattheFDA."Theycomplainedbitterly
in1964thatDMSOwasbothacommercialsolventandadrug.
Theycouldnotcontrolit.FrancesKelseyraisedherhandsand
said'WesimplycannotcopewithaproductlikeDMSO.We
envisionhundredsof(newdrug)applicationscominginandwe
simplydon'thavebudgetorstaff'.Afterthat,theFDAtooka
hardlineonDMSO".

Rememberingthalidomide,theFDAapparentlywaslookingfor
thingstostop,andfounditschanceinlate1965.TheFDA
learnedthattestsinrabbits,dogs,andpigs(butnothumans)
hadshownsomeproblems.WhenquantitiesofDMSOequalto

abouttentimesthemaximumhumandose(i.e.,equalto350
gramsadayfora175poundman)weregiveneverydayovera
periodofsixmonths,slightchangesinthelensesofthe
animals'eyeswouldresult,enoughtoproduceaslight
nearsightedness.Thelenschangeswerenotenoughtocause
dogsdifficultywhenrunningtheydidn'tbumpintothings
andinsomecases,thechangesdisappearedafterthemassive
DMSOdoseswerestopped.Innotestatthattimeorsincehas
DMSOevercausedcataracts,eitherinanimalsorinhumans.

TheFDAdecidedthatDMSOwasthedangerousdrugitwas
lookingfor.ThefirstDr.Jacobandhiscolleaguesknewofthe
animaltestswasonNovember10,1965.Onthatcrucialdate,
theFDAsentnoticestoallthedrugcompaniesinvolvedin
DMSOresearch(Squibb,Syntex,Merck)that"administrationof
thedrugmustbediscontinuedandthedrugrecalledfromall
clinicalinvestigation".Inaddition,theFDAputoutaseriesof
pressreleasescarriedbymediaallovertheworldwarningof
theblindingeffectsofDMSO,andleadingpeopletobelievethat
DMSOcausedcataracts.Butnoanimalswereblinded,andthe
FDAknewthat.The"spin"wasdesignedtoshowthatonce
againtheFDAhad"saved"us.

Thusresearchwasstoppedinitstracksonadrugwhichwas
stoppingpain(whennothingelsecould)frombursitis,arthritis
(includingrheumatoid),andgout,whichwascuttingatleastin
halfthetimeneededforrecoveryfromathleticinjuries,and
whichhadevensavedaboy'slifewhenhisneckwasbrokenin
anaccident.DMSOpreventsswellingandrapidinjectionofthe
chemicalsoonaftertheaccidentpreventedtheswellingwhich
otherwisewouldhavechokedhimtodeath.

Drs.JacobandRosenbaumandRobertHerschlerhadconstantly
beenlookingforanyindicationofDMSOtoxicityandhadfound
none.Learningoftheanimaldata,asquicklyascouldbe
arrangedtheybroughtpastandcurrentpatientstothe
ophthalmologistsattheUniversityofOregontolookforlens
changesofanysort.Aftermonthsoftesting,absolutelynolens
problemswerefound.Tothecontrary,severalreportedthey
couldseebetterafterusingDMSO(onotherpartsofthebody).
Sotheordertostopresearchhadbeenbasedonaninaccurate
pretext.

InformedofthetestsbyDr.Jacobandothersshowingthat
humanswerenotexperiencingthesamelenschangesasthe
threeanimalspecies,theFDAatfirstseemedtohavesecond
thoughts.Hadtheyoverreacted?

AnFDAlesseagertoplay"gotcha"mighthavehandledthe
situationquitedifferently.Uponreceivingtheinitiallensdata,
theymighthaveimmediatelyinformedthedrugcompaniesand
Dr.Jacobandaskedthemurgentlytocheckifanyhumanswere
experiencingthesameproblemsastheanimals,whichiswhat
Jacobandhisteamdidanyway,beingresponsiblescientists.

Or,afteritsfirstrelease,theFDAcouldhaveannouncedthatit
wasgoodtobevigilantbutthatDMS0wasnotcausingthe
sameresultsinhumansashadbeenseeninsomeanimals.It
couldthenhavesaidquietlytotheresearchers,"watchvery
carefullyforhumanproblemsbecauseifsuchoccur,DMSOwill
havetobewithdrawn".IftheFDAhaddonethat,everybody
wouldhavebeenhappy.TheFDAwouldhaveshownits
vigilancefordrugdangers,whichiswhatit'ssupposedtodo.
Andnobodywouldwanttoworkwithamedicinethatcaused
eyeproblems.

Finally,FDAadoptedanalltoohumanattitudetheydidnot
wanttoadmittheyhadmadeamistake.Theyapparently
arrivedatadecisionthatDMSOmustbeanotherthalidomide
andthatifFDAagentsonlylookedhardenough,theywould
findtheevidenceandallwouldbeheroes.Ifithadturnedout
thatway,theywouldhavebeen,butitdidn't.

In1965,theJAMAprintedanarticlebyDr.JacobonDMSO.
Interestingly,histroublehasonlybeenwiththeFDA,notthe
AMA.TheJAMAhasneverturneddownoneofhisarticles,and
heregularlywritesitsbookreviews.

BeforefreedominDMSOresearchwaswithdrawn,orthopedic
surgeonDr.ForrestRiordansawDMSOsaveafrostbite
patient'slimbs.Arrivinghomeaftermidnightona15degreeF
night,a59yearoldwomanslippedontheiceoutsideher
garage,hitherhead,lostconsciousness,andlaybesidehercar
forsixhours.BythetimeDr.Riordansawher,herfeetand
handswerepurple,andherfingerswereturningblack.Having
alreadytreated50patientswithDMSOandbeingawareofits
useinpreservingandrestoringtissue,Dr.Riordandecidedto
giveitatry.PatMcGradydescribeswhathappened."The
questionwas,wouldDMSOgivenewlifetothelady'sdying
fingersandrestorebloodtoherlimbs?Tenminutesafter
RiordanhadswabbedDMSOonthepatient'shandsandlower
legs,thetreatedareasreddenedwiththereturnofblood.The
DMSOodorwasonherbreath,showingthatthedrugwas
permeatingthewoman'ssystem.Onthesecondday,blisters
hadpoppedoutonthefrozenareasandthateveningshe
regainedconsciousness...Onthethirdday,sensationbegan
returningtosomeofthetoesandlaterthetipsofthefingers
begantohavefeelingagain.ByDaySeven,shewasabletoflex
herjoints.Foranentiremonth,thepatientwassloshed,
swabbed,anddabbedwithDMSO.Almostagallonofitwas
used,butsideeffectsamountedonlytoanoccasionalrash,abit
ofburninganditching...ByDayFourteen,itwasclearthatall
tissueswereviable...Riordanconcludedthatthedrugshouldbe
appliedwithin12hoursoffreezingandthat24hoursmaymark
thecriticalpointinreversingdamagetotheinvolvedblood
vessels".

PlanninghadbeengoingonforsometimeforaSymposiumon
DMSOtobeheldinMarch1966attheNewYorkAcademyof
Sciences.OnNovember9,1965,atopFDAofficialtoldDr.
JacobthathehaditongoodauthoritythattheSymposium
wouldneverbeheld,notexplainingthathewouldannouncethe
DMSObanthenextday.

Hewaswrong.Dr.ChaunceyLeakeoftheUniversityof
CaliforniaMedicalCenter,whohadagreedtochairthe
Symposium,toldDeanBaird,Dr.Jacob'ssuperioratthe
MedicalSchool,thathe'dbeenaskedtodropplansforthe
symposiumonthegroundsthatitwouldbeembarrassingfor
boththedrugcompaniesandtheFDA.Bairdreplied"Chauncey,
whenhaveyouandIasdeansandeducatorseverletpoliticalor
economicconsiderationscompromisethesearchforscientific
truth?"BairdalsotoldJacobthatCrownZellerbach,unusedto
suchcontroversy,hadurgedhimtocalloffthesymposium.The
NewYorkAcademyofSciences,alarge,prestigiousorganization
foundedin1828withover25,000members,madetheir
displeasureatpoliticalinterferenceevidentbyputtingupthe
$60,000costofthemeetingwhenpharmaceuticalcompanies
refusedtodoso.

UndeterredbytheFDA,over1,000peoplefromtheworld
scientificcommunitywereinattendancewhenthesymposium
openedattheWaldorfAstoriaonMarch14,1966,togoonfor
threedays.WhenoneoftheFDAofficialsspoke,stating"this
symposiumisameasureofthefreedomofinvestigation..,
prevailinginthiscountry",peoplewonderedifhewasbeing
ironic.

ThepaperspresentedshowedgreatenthusiasmforDMSOand
itsunusualmedicalproperties.Itsabilitytoprotectlivingcells
fromcoldandradiationwasdiscussed,anditslackoftoxicity
wasstressed.PatMcGradywhoattended,wrote,"thestudies
coveredaspectrumofdiseasesprobablyfargreaterthanany
everbeforeconsideredinrelationtoasingledrug".

McGradycalledspecialattentiontoanextraordinarypaper
presentedbyDr.EduardoRamirezandDr.SegisfredoLuzaof
theAyetanoHerediaUniversityinLima,Peru.Afterextensive
testsonanimalsandthenonnormalhumans,Dr.Ramirez
reported"injecting50%or80%DMSOintramuscularlyinto
patientswithacuteandchronicschizophrenia"andthat"ofthe
14acutecases,everysingleonewasdischargedfromthe
hospitalwithin45daysafterthestartofDMSOtreatment...He
saidthat4ofthe11chroniccases,oneofwhomhasbeenillfor

14years,weredischargedeventually,andtheother7improved
agreatdealandweregivenoccupationaltherapy...Heobserved
rapiddecreaseinagitation...recessionofpersecutionfeeling,a
relativelysuddentendencytocommunicateandtostayclean..,
thewaneofobsessions,returntoalertness,andacalmness
wheretherehadbeenrestlessnessandanxiety".Theonlyside
effectswerethecharacteristicgarliclikeodorofDMSO.

Attheendofthesymposium,afteranalmostdazzling
presentationofpapers,McGradyreportedthat"anFDAagent
turnedtoAnnSullivanofthePortlandOregonianandsaid
'DMSOisthrough'.Annlookedatthemaninamazementand
asked'Wheredidyouevergetthatidea?''Mybosstoldme',
theagentanswered."

Meanwhile,thedrugcompanieswhohadbeendoingclinical
trialswerereexaminingpatientsandgatheringdataregarding
possibleeyedamage.Squibbcollected3,000cases,Merck
17,000cases,andSyntex7,000.Noeyechangesordamageor
anyothersignoftoxicitywerefound.Bythistime,DMSOhad
beenusedin100,000people,andtherehadbeenno
complaintsofeyeproblemsanywhere.Additionally,sufficient
animaltestshadbeencarriedouttomakeitclearthatthelens
changesthathadbeenobservedwere"speciesspecific",i.e.,
theyonlyoccurredindogs,rabbits,andpigs,andnotin
monkeys,otherprimates,oranyotheranimals.

Neitherthepharmaceuticalreportsorthenewanimaltests
seemedtohavemucheffectontheFDA'snewcommissioner,
Dr.JamesGoddard.Goddardsoonshowedthatheintendedto
usethepolicepowersthatCongresshadgivenhimto
investigatescientists,whohadneverbeforebeentreatedthat
waybyfederalregulators.Quicklyadoptingatoughline,he
tooktheFDAintosomesurprisingnewareas.Speakingtoan
AMAconvention,heannouncedthat"theFDAisnowathird
partytothepracticeofmedicine",tothegeneralconsternation
ofthedoctors.ItbegantolookasthoughDr.Goddardwasout
toprovehetoocouldstopathalidomideandthathesuspected
maybeDMSOwasit.

DMSOpatients,however,didnotagree.Thosewhohadfound
DMSOaveritableWD40forarthritiswerefuriouswhentheir
painreturnedaftertheFDAstoppedDMSO.Theytalkedtothe
press,theycalledtheirsenatorsandcongressmen,andwrote
angryletterstotheFDA.PatMcGradyprovidesafewsamples:

haveneverinmylifewishedillofanyonebutexperiencingthe
caliberofthisagency(FDA)Iwisheverylastoneofthemwould
suddenlyhaveanattackofacutearthritissopainfulthatyou
couldhearthemyellfromtheretohereandhavetobegforthe
onlydrugdiscoveredthatcouldgivethemrealhelp.

FDAstatementscontinuedtorefertoDMSO'sdangerousside
effectsbutgavenospecifics,nowho,when,where.Pat
McGradypressedfourconsecutiveFDAcommissionersfordata
onthe"dangerouseffects".Theyallrepliedthattheinformation
wasintheirfiles.Heaskedthemtoproduceitfourtimes.
Theypromisedtosendittohimfourtimes,butitnever
came.WhileOfficialMedicinehadstoppedDMSOresearchin
theU.S.,atleastitcouldgoonfreelyelsewhere.AThird
InternationalSymposiumonDMSOwasheldinViennain
November1966and250scientistsfrom12countriesattended.
Dr.ChaunceyLeake,askeynoter,said,"Fortunately,members
ofthehealthprofessionsthroughouttheworldarenotallbound
bythebureaucraticregulationsandjudgmentsoftheU.S.Food
andDrugAdministration".PatMcGrady,whoalsoattended,
commented"Itwasstrangehearingthisstatesmanofsciencein
thishallandthiscity,whichlessthanagenerationagohad
beenoccupiedbyoneofthebloodiestregimesinhistory,now
apologizeforregimentationinAmerica".

Healsoreported,"AsattheBerlinandNewYorksymposia,
scientistssaidtheyhadfailedtoinduceeyedamagewithDMSO
inanyanimalspeciesclosetothehuman,andtheycouldfind
noevidenceofeyetroublesattributabletoDMSOinany
patient".

Someoftheinterestingpaperspresented,McGradywrote,
showedthatDMSObenefited77%ofpatientswithrheumatoid
arthritisand84%withosteoarthritis,controlledmanykindsof
pain,spedhealing,offsetinjuriouseffectsofradiationtherapy,
andprovedsuperiortoallothertherapyforwinterandsports
injuries.Experimentsinanimalsshowedthatwhengivento
micetendaysbeforeinfection,DMSOpreventedtyphus,and
thatDMSOtendedtostabilizecollagen,apossibleantiaging
effect.McGradynotedthat"scoresofscientistsconfirmedthe
majorityofclaimsJacobhadmade...Distinguishedscientists
clusteredaroundhimandcongratulatedhimforwhatsome
calledaclassicalcontributiontoscienceandmedicine".Itwas
learnedattheconferencethatGermanyquietlywasrestoring
DMSOtodrugstoresasaprescriptionmedicine.

Dr.RichardBrobyn,whileaconsultantforMerck,haddeviseda
planforhumantoxicityexperimentsinprisoners.AftertheFDA
crackdown,MercklostinterestbutSquibblikedhisidea.Squibb
proposedtotheFDAthatSquibbandFDAsplitthecostfor

Brobyn'splanandtheFDAagreed.Arrangementsweremade
forDr.Brobyntocarryoutthetrialsatthestateprisonin
VacavilleCaliforniainthefallof1967.

Bythistime,allresearchwithprisonerswascarriedoutin
accordancewiththeethicalprinciplesworkedoutbyDr.Andrew
IvywhenhewastheAmericanmedicalethicsadviseratthe
Nurembergtrials.Yearslater,Dr.BrobyntoldPatMcGradythat
hehimselftooktheamountofDMSOtobegiventothe
prisoners"becauseIwouldn'texpectapatientorexperimental
subjecttodosomethingIwouldn'tdomyself".

Brobyn'splanwasfor67maleprisonerstocoverthemselves
withtentimesthepermissiblehumandoseofDMSOeveryday
fortwoweeks,afterwhichtheywerecloselyexamined.Finding
notraceofanyeffectsotherthanarash(anoccasionalresultof
DMSOappliedtotheskin),thesecond,90dayphaseofthe
teststarted.Fortyprisonerssimilarlydousedthemselveseach
daywithDMSO,whichquicklypenetratedtheskin.Regularly
puttonumerousexamswithspecialattentiontoeyes,atthe
endof90daysnoevidenceoftoxicityhadbeenseeninthe
prisonersandtheattendingophthalmologistsawnoeffectatall
ontheprisoners'eyes.Dr.MortonWalkerobservedinDMSO,
Nature'sHealerthat"ifsugar,salt,coffee,orteahadbeen
takenbytheprisonersoverthreemonthsinquantitiesequalto
theDMSOtheyabsorbed,itwouldhavekilledthem".Pat
McGradylateraskedDr.Brobynwhatifhehadgiventhe
prisonerstentimesthepermissibledoseofaspirineverdayfor
threemonths.Brobynreplied,"You'reasking...isaspirinmore
toxicthanDMSO?Myanswer:Certainly".

Brobynwasright.Theclassictestfortoxicityisknownasthe
LD50test,whichmeasuresthelethaldose(LD)atwhichhalf
ofagroupoftestanimalsiskilled.TheLD50testsforaspirin
andDMSOshowthataspirinisseventimesastoxicasDMSO.

AyearaftertheVacavilletests,theFDAlifteditsbanonclinical
testinginhumansandapprovedtestsofDMSOinrheumatoid
arthritisandsclerodermaand,separately,insprains,bursitis,
andtendinitis.Thisdidnotreleaseittodoctorsforgeneraluse
intheseconditions,butonlypermitteddrugcompaniesto
preparecomplicatedapplicationsfortestinginthem.

In1970,Dr.M.BrandsmaofLosAngelesreportedthatacase
ofsystemiclupuserythematosus,whichhadnotrespondedto
prednisone,hadgoneintoremissionforthreeyears(atthetime
ofreporting)fromDMSO.Thesameyear,Britishscientists
foundintwodoubleblindstudiesthatDMSOcombinedwith
idoxyuridinestoppedthesufferingfrompainfulshinglesinfrom
2to9days.

VariouspiecesofresearchhadshownDMSOtobeeffective
againstvirusesandanimportantclueastowhythishappened
wasgivenin1971byDr.M.KunzeandassociatesinVienna.

Theirstudycheckedtheproductionofinterferoninmice
followinginfectionofthemicebythescientistswithcertain
viruses.TheyreportedthatwhenDMSOwasinjected10
minutesafterthemicewereinfectedwithviruses,"theanimals
producedanywherefrom2to16timesasmuchinterferonas
theywouldhave,hadnoDMSObeengivenaftertheirbeing
infected".

TheverysignificantfactthatDMSOwouldcrossthebloodbrain
barrierhadbeenevidentfromDr.Jacob'searlyresearch.For
thoseinterestedin"smartpills",theearly1970'sworkwhich
JohnL.BrinkandDonaldG.SteinofClarkUniversitypublished
inVolume158ofSciencemagazineisrelevant.Magnesium
pemoline(PMH)hadalreadybeennotedtoimprovelearningin
ratsandinhumans.BrinkandSteinreportedthatPMH
dissolvedin100%DMSOgreatlyincreasedrats'learning
abilitiesoverwhatwasachievedwithpemolinealone.Injecting
intoratsasolutionofradioactivePMHorasolutionof
radioactivePMHdissolvedinDMSO,theynotedthatthe
DMSO/PMHsolutionwasfrom50%100%moresuccessfulin
crossingthebloodbrainbarrierthanthePMH+watersolution
alone.

PatMcGradyonceaskedDr.StanleyJacobwhowouldgainthe
mostfromDMSO.HereisDr.Jacob'sanswer."Quadraplegiais
thesaddestthingthathappenstopeople.Itoccursmostoften
totheyoungandhealthy,tosoldiersfightingourwars,to
youngstersdriving,toathletesinpersonalcontactgames.Asa
quadraplegic,youlieinbed,atotalvegetable.Yourmind
functionsbutyoucannotpassurineorhaveabowelmovement
withouthelp...Somanyofthemeventuallysaytome'Dr.
Jacob,Icouldn'tevencommitsuicide'."JacobtoldMcGrady
aboutonesuchpatient,acasewherehewascalledinalmost
immediatelyfollowinganaccident."A16yearoldgirl,afine
athlete,whodoveoffaboardandlandedonherneckonthe
bottomofthepool.Herdoctorwaspessimisticbutwillingtotry
almostanythingthatofferedaglimmerofhope.Shewasa
completequadraplegic,utterlyhelpless.ShewasonDMSOfor
anentireyear.Graduallyonebyone,itseemedherorgans
begantofunctionagain.Eventually,shewalked.Andnowsheis
incollege,doingverywell."

ThiswasaccomplishedwiththemedicineonwhichFDAbanned
researchintheU.S.in1965.Itwas13yearslaterbeforethe
FDAapprovedDMSOasaprescriptiondrugforusein
interstitialcystitis.

GreyKeinsleyofLittleton,Colorado,istheonetime
quadraplegicmentionedearlierbyDr.Jacob,whowentonto
collegeandtoajobinabank.ButKeinsleydidnotstartDMSO
untilFebruary1965,twoyearsafterhisaccident.ByAugust
1965,heliftedbotharmsoverhisheadandputonaTshirt
unassisted.Alittlelatersensationbegantoreturntohislower
chestandhisrighthip.ThentheFDAbannedDMSO,andhe

wasdeprivedofitforthreeyears,startingagainonlyin1968.
Thenextyear,hereceivedhisbachelorofartsdegreein
economics.HismothertoldMcGradythatDr.Jacobnotonlydid
notchargeforhisservices,butpaidbillsforextensivemedical
examinationswhichweredoneinColorado.McGradyreported
thatasof1973,GreyKeinsleycouldmovebothofhislegs.
GreyKeinsleyistheonlyknowncaseofaquadraplegic
regainingmovementofthelowerlimbswhentherapywas
startedtwoyearsaftertheaccident.Dr.Jacobhasseentwo
quadraplegicpatientsrecovercompletelywhenDMSOwas
startedwithinonehouraftertheaccident.

In1971,SquibbPharmaceuticalagainfiledanNDA,stating
oncemorethatDMSOwasreadytobecomeaprescriptiondrug,
andagainwasturneddownbytheFDA.

In1972,thepredictionin1964ofStanleyJacob'scolleague
cametruetheFDAaskedtheNationalAcademyofSciences
(NAS),throughitsNationalResearchCounciltomakean
"independentreview"ofallinformationontheeffectivenessand
toxicityofDMSO.However,theNASgotmuchofitsfundingat
thattimefromtheFDA.AnNASofficertoldPatMcGrady"we
havebeenaskedtowashtheFDA'sdirtylinen,andwehave
agreed."

McGradylearnedthattheNASintendedtotake4monthsjust
toplanhowitwouldreadthe1,200papers(atthattime)on
DMSO,andthentotake1824monthstodoso.Atapress
conference,McGradytoldtheNASpresidentthat,havingread
allthepapers,hecalculatedthathe,asaslowreader,could
readthemallinthreeweeks,orafastreadercouldgothrough
themallintwoweeks.

Insteadoftakingtwoyearstoreadthematerial,McGrady
challenged,whynotsetthreefastreaderstogooverthepapers
intwoweeksandthenfreethedrugformedicaluseifno
reasonwasfoundtocontinuetheban.Thiswouldbepreferable,
hepointedout,toholdingupresearchonDMSO,sincethe
publishedstudiesseemedtoshownotoxicitytohumans.He
furthersuggestedthattheFDAberequiredtoprovidesolid
evidenceoftoxicity,iftheyhadany,whileDr.Jacobandhis
colleaguesbeinvitedtoprovideallfavorableandunfavorable
reports.

Thesesuggestionswereapparentlyfartoosensibletobetaken
seriously.Whenthereportcameoutin1974,itseemedas
thoughtheOfficialMedicineoftheFDAwasspeakingthrough
themouthoftheNAS.Thereportstated(despite1,200papers
tothecontrary)that"therewasinadequatescientificevidence
ofeffectivenessofDMSOforthetreatmentofanydisease,and
thatthetoxicitypotentialwassufficientlygreatthatthedrug
shouldremainaninvestigationaldrug".ThusDMSOwouldnot
bereleasedfordoctorstouseingeneralpractice,butwould
remainbottledup.

In1974,anothersymposiumonDMSOwasheldattheNew
YorkAcademyofSciences.In1975,theuniversallylikedPat
McGrady,oncescienceadvisortotheAmericanCancerSociety,
diedofcancer.HisDMSO,thePersecutedDrugisaclassicon
theearlyyearsofDMSO.

Meanwhile,inHouston,Dr.EliJordonTucker,anelderlyand
highlyrespectedorthopedicsurgeon,wastreatingcancerwitha
combinationofDMSOandhematoxylon,anontoxicdye
sometimesusedasamedicine.Inexperimentsincancerous
miceconductedbyThomasD.Rogers,PhD,underthe
supervisionofVernonScholesMDatNorthTexasState
University,themixturewasseentogodirectlytotumorsand
nowhereelse,whereiteffectivelystarvedthem.Hematoxylon
withoutDMSOwasfoundtohavenoeffectatalloncancer.In
1972,HoustonKHOUTVnewsmanRonStonedida
documentaryonDr.Tucker'sachievementsincancer.Dr.
TuckerhimselfneverpublishedhisDMSOhematoxylonresults
after1968outofconcernoverlosinghislicenseforusingan
unapproveddrug.Dr.MortonWalkerdevoted30pagesofhis
DMSO,Nature'sHealertothefascinatingstoryofDr.Tucker.

FindinghisDMSOhematoxylonmixeffectiveinlargecell
lymphosarcomaandadenocarcinomaindogs,Dr.Tuckerworked
outahumandosagewhichhegaveonlytoterminalpatients.

OnewhorememberstheDMSOcombinationandDr.Tucker
verywellisAlvaRuthWilsonintheHoustonarea.Shequalified
forhistreatmentbecausewhenshesoughthimout(after
hearingtheTVprogram),shehadbeengivensixmonthstolive
fromlymphosarcoma.StartinginJanuary1973,shetookan
intravenousdripoftheDMSOhematoxylonmixturefivedaysa
week.BeforerequestingDr.Tucker'streatment,Mrs.Wilson
hadmaximumamountsofchemotherapyandradiation,but
neitherhelpedthetumorskeptonspreading.Chemotherapy
hadtobestoppedbecauseitssideeffectsweregivingher
leukopenia,adiseaseinwhichherwhitecellshaddroppedto
waybelownormal,leavingherwithalmostnoimmunity.While
shewasonDr.Tucker'sprogram,herconventionaldoctor
wantedtogivehermoreradiation.Dr.Tuckertoldherthat
sinceshewasonDMSO,theradiationwouldnothurther,afact
wellestablishedbyclinicalstudiesinvariouscountriesand
virtuallyignoredintheUnitedStates.Althoughnoprimary
sourceofhercancerwaseverfound,somecloudinessinXrays
ofthestomacharousedsuspicion,sothatwaswherethe
radiationwasdirected.Anotherwoman(notoneofDr.Tucker's
patients)whostartedradiationofthestomachthesameday
returnedforthesecondtreatmentinawheelchair,soillhadthe
radiationmadeher,andforthethirdonastretcherasapatient

inthehospital.ButMrs.Wilson,takingherdailyDMSOI.V.,
tookthesameradiationandfeltgreat.ByJanuary1974,aftera

andshecontinuesinfinehealthin2000.

AsfarasDr.Jacobknows,DMSOwasnotusedonthosewho
sufferedradiationdamageatChernobyl.

AnotherofDr.Tucker'ssuccessstories,JoeFloydofSpring,
Texas,was71andingoodhealthwheninterviewedbyDr.
Walkerin1989.In1974,Floydwasstrickenwithdeadly
adenocarcinoma.Bycoincidence,hisdoctor'swifehadthesame
kindofcancerandthedoctorurgedFloydtotakethe
chemotherapyhiswifewouldtake.Floyddemurredandsought
outDr.Tucker.

Sixmonthslater,hewasbackatwork,butthedoctor'swife
wasdead.

ClydeRobertLindsayknowsaboutDMSO.At3yearsofage,in
1966,hewasgivenupfordeadwithcancer.Dr.Tuckergave
hismotheradropperbottleofDMSO+hematoxylonandtoldher
togivehim5dropsindistilledwatereverymorningonan
emptystomach.In1992,Dr.Walkerfoundhimtobeabig,
strongyoungmanof29.

WhileresearchingforDMSO,Nature'sHealer,Dr.Walkervisited
Dr.Tucker,whogavehimhisformula.Then,asWalker
explains,"Dr.Tuckerhimselfcamedownwithaformofcancer
thatwouldhaverespondedtohisDMSO+hematoxylon
treatment,butbeforehecouldadministerittohimself,hefell
intoacoma".Noonehadaccesstotheformula,andDr.Walker
didnotknowthatDr.TuckerneededituntilafterDr.Tucker
died.

TomakesureDr.Tucker'sformuladoesnotgetlost,Dr.Walker
printeditinDMSO,Nature'sHealer,withcomp1eteinstructions
forpreparationanddosage.Walkernotesthatthetreatment
solutioncanbetakenorally(thewayClydeRobertLindsaytook
it).

Dr.Tucker'sremarkablework,asyetunnoticedbyconventional
medicine,shouldnotbeconsideredsurprisingsincetherehave
beennumerousstudiesindicatingthatDMSOeitherbyitselfor
incombinationwithotherdrugscanbehelpfulincancer.As
mentionedearlier,DMSOisknowntostimulatethebody's
productionofinterferonwhich,synthesized,hasbeenusedin
cancertreatment.DMSOhasbeenfoundtopotentiatecertain
chemotherapieswhilerenderingthemlesstoxic,andthishas
beenreportedinthemedicalliterature.DMSOwouldpermit
saferandmoreeffectiveuseofradiationincancertreatment,
becauseofitsprotectiveaction(asnotedinMrs.Wilson'scase).

"organismsfrequentlyfoundincancerandleukemiapatients

contactwithDr.StanleyJacobofOregonandthathewas
monitoringtheuseofDM50."

Aboutoneweeklater,theFDAapprovedtheuseofDMSOin
thetreatmentofinterstitialcystitis.This1978actionwasthe
firsttimeFDAhadapprovedDMSOasaprescriptiondrugfor
anyhumanailment.Consideringthatithadbeen13yearssince
thecrackdown,itwasamajorbreakthrough,anditcertainly
seemedthatDr.Tuckerhadhadsomethingtodowith
precipitatingit.

Unbelievably,asweenterthe21Stcenturyalltheseyearslater,
itisstilltheonlyFDAapprovedhumanuseforDMSO.Itisalso
approvedforthepreservationoffrozenhumantissues,thefirst
usetowhichStanleyJacobputDMSO.Ironictothinkthat
surgeonssoakinDMSOtissuessuchasthebonemarrowwhich
theywilllaterplaceinhumanbodies.Thischemicalisfamous
foritspenetratingabilities,sosuchtransplantsareobviously
drenchedinDMSO.It'sconsideredsafeenoughtobeapproved
forthat,butnotforgeneralmedicaluse,fordoctorstousein
anyofthehundredsofwayswhereDMSOcanbeeffective.

WhatdoestheFDAthinkitissavingusfrom?

TheFDAusedthebogusissueofeyedamageforseveral
decadestoholdbackDMSO.Dr.Walkerpointsoutthat
"adverseeyefindingshavebeenreportedwithallthearthritis
drugs,suchasAnaprox,Naprosyn,andMotrin(aspertheir
packageinserts)yetnoonehassuggestedthattheseminimally
effectivedrugsbetakenoffthemarket."

Asfaraseyesareconcerned,theevidenceonDMSOisquiteto
thecontrary.WhenseveralpatientstreatedwithDMSOfor
muscularproblemsreportedtoDr.Jacobthattheirvisionhad
improved,hesentthemtoDr.RobertO.Hill,ophthalmologist
attheUniversityofOregonMedicalSchool.Confirmingthe
favorablechanges,Dr.Hillbeganhisownexperimentswith
DMSO(afteritwasknownthatthelenschangesdidnothappen
inhumans).Hisresearchshoweddropsof50%DMSOtobe
effectiveinretinitispigmentosaandmaculardegeneration,and
presentedareportonthisattheNewYorkAcademyofSciences
symposiumin1971.

HavingreadDr.Hill'sstudy,Icalledhim.Inadditiontowhat

Deise,afriendfromBrazil(whereDMSOislegal),toldmethat
aNewYorkeyedoctorhadtoldhershewasdevelopingmacular
degeneration,soItoldhertheabovestory.Ayearlater,she
informedmethatthesamedoctorhadtoldherthathersigns
ofmaculardegenerationhaddisappeared.Thepreviousyear,
shehadpersistentlyputDMSOdropsinhereyesseveraltimes
aday.

TellinganotherfriendwithmaculardegenerationofDeise's
experience,shelookedforDMSOatahealthfoodstoreand
thenbalked.ThebottleofDMSO,shepointedout,wasclearly
labeled"Donotgetintotheeyes.Donottouchtheskin.Ifgets
onskin,callaphysician".Thelabelalsoread"Thisissoldonly
asasolvent".Callingthe800numberonthelabel,Ilearned
thattheproductwaspureDMSO,notindustrialgrade.With
thatsortofwarningonthelabel,howcouldanyoneguessthat
theliquidinthatbottleisusedontheskinofmanyathletic
teamswhentherearemuscularinjuries.Suchistheresultof
FDA'spolicyofcensoringtruthfulhealthclaims,preventing
Americansfromlearningwhatthisandotherproductscando
forthem.

In1978,Dr.ArthurScherbel,thenchiefofRheumatologyat
theClevelandClinic,carriedoutastudyoftheuseofDMSO
intravenouslyinscleroderma,aparticularlymiserabledisease
affectingaround150,000Americans.Partsofthebody
increasinglycalcifyandbecomerigid,aneventuallyfatal
conditionforwhichtherewasthenandstillisnocure.Dr.
ScherbelfoundclearevidenceofDMSO'sefficacyinscleroderma
andsubmittedhistrialwithaNewDrugApplication(NDA)to
theFDA,whichturnedhimdown.DMSOisapprovedforusein
sclerodermainCanada.

Somethingelsehappenedin1978thatopenedwindowsinthe
overregulatedU.S.medicalsystem.ThechemicalEDTAhas
longbeenonthe"GRAS"list(GenerallyRegardedAsSafe)and
isFDAapprovedforuseintravenouslyfortheremovaloflead,
incasesofleadpoisoning.ReasoningthatifEDTAcouldremove
leaditmightalsoremovecalcium,certainmedicalpioneers
triedEDTAtodealwithcalcifiedarteries,andsawpatients'
circulationimprove.ThelateDr.RayEverswasoneofthe
foremostofthosepioneers.SoontheFDAcamedownonhim
forhis"unapproved"useofEDTA.Insteadofcavingin,Dr.
EverssuedtheFDAinFederalCourt,askingforaninjunctionto
stoptheagencyfrominterferinginhispracticeofmedicine.
Thiswasnottheirbusiness,hedeclared,butrathermaking
surethatdrugsaresafe.SinceFDAhadlongsincedeclared

thatEDTAwassafeforuseinhumans,hetoldthecourtthatas
alicensedphysicianitwashisrighttouseasafedrugin
whateverwayhefoundtobeuseful.TheFDA'sinterpretationof
currentlawwasthenandstillisthatitrequiresthemtocontrol
everyusageofeverydrug.Totheirchagrin,theCourtagreed
withDr.Evers,stating,"CongressdidnotempowertheFDAto
interferewithmedicalpracticebylimitingtheabilityof
physicianstoprescribeaccordingtotheirbestjudgment".The
FDAappealed,andhewonagain.TheFDAdidnotappeala
secondtime,lettingtherulingstand.

TheEversRulingthusmakesitlegalforadoctortouseanFDA
approveddruginanywayhe/shethinksfit.Combinedwiththe
FDA's1978approvalforuseininterstitialcystitis,thismeant
thatsinceDMSOhadbeenapprovedforonehumanuse,
doctorscouldnowuseitforotherhumanuses,andmanydid.

In1979,justtomakesuretheFDAdidn'tinterfere,theOregon
legislaturepassedabillprotectingDr.Jacob'srighttouse
DMSOwithinthestate.

InSeptember1979,theFDApublishedaregulationabolishing
its1965regulationwhichhadbannedgeneralresearchin
DMSO,butitsposturewasstillsuspicious.Theunbending
bureaucracywasbeginningtobendabit,butitwasalittlelate.
FDAhadsaidnosomanytimesthatdrugcompanieswere
beginningtobelievetheymeantitandmedicalstudiesbegan
toslowdown.ItwastakingthepatienceofJobtopersistwith
DMSOagainstsuchopposition,arepeatofthepatternwithDr.
Ivy.TheFDAhadputoutsomuchstaticthatthescientific
communitybegantobackoff.

Still,theEversRulinghadopenedthingsupconsiderably,and
certainbolddoctorsproceededtouseDMSOintravenously,
oftenseeingdramaticresults.OneofthosepioneerswasDr.
WilliamCampbellDouglass,apersonusedtomakinghisown
decisions.Mrs.RuthLewisofSarasota,Florida,toldDr.Morton
WalkerofherexperienceswithDr.Douglass.Rheumatoid
arthritiscausedhersomuchpainshecouldnotwalkwithouta
cane.Afterabackinjury,shewastoldshehadtoremaininbed
forsixmonths.Realizingthatifshedidsoshemightneverwalk
again,evenwithcanes,shedecidedtotrysomethingelse.Her
sonandhusbandliterallycarriedherintoDr.Douglass'office,
theninMarietta,Georgia,"unabletoputbothfeetonthe
ground",shetoldDr.Walker."After21/2weeksofDMSO
