Assi Infiltration

This document contains 4 assignments related to calculating infiltration and runoff from rainfall data using the Horton model. The first assignment asks to calculate infiltration and runoff given hourly rainfall amounts and Horton model parameters. The second asks to plot a rainfall hyetograph from data, calculate total rainfall, and determine the phi-index. The third asks to calculate the phi-index and total infiltration given rainfall data and total runoff. The fourth asks to determine the phi-index from rainfall intensity data and a given total runoff depth.

Assignment:

INFILTRATION

1. A 5-hr storm over a 6 hectare basin produces a 125 mm rainfall: 30.48

mm/hr for the first hour, 53.34 mm/hr for the second hour, 22.86 mm/hr
for the third hour, and 10.16 mm/hr for the last two hours. Determine the
infiltration that would result from the Horton model with k = 1.1 hr -1, fc =
5.08mm/hr, and f0 = 22.86 mm/hr. Compute the actual infiltration and
overland flow (run-off) for this condition, in mm/hr.

2. The rainfall data in the table below were recorded at a gauging site on a
small urban watershed.
o Plot the rainfall hyetograph.
o Determine the total storm rainfall depth.
o If the net rainfall (or runoff depth) for the storm was 30.50 cm, find the
phi-index (cm/hr)
Time (hr) Rainfall
(cm)
0 0.0
0.5 5.0
1.0 5.5
1.5 10.0
2.0 12.0
2.5 10.0
3.0 4.5
3.5 3.0
4.0 2.5
4.5 0.0

3. Find the phi-index in (mm/hr) and total depth of infiltrated water using
the data below. The direct runoff was 114.3 mm for a 405.0 hectares
watershed.
Time (hr) Rainfall
(mm)
1 127.0
2 101.6
3 25.4
4 56.2
5 50.8

4. If the following data corresponds to the rainfall of a 24-hr storm during

which the runoff depth was recorded to be 7.60 cm, determine the phi-index.
Time (hr) 0-3 3-5 5-9 9 - 12 12 - 19 19 - 24
Rainfall Intensity
(cm/hr) 0.40 0.70 1.10 1.40 0.50 0.20
