Manipulated Variable: Cascade Control

Cascade control decreases the effect of disturbances acting on a manipulated variable by including two control loops. The secondary loop receives the primary controller's output as its setpoint and decreases disturbances to the manipulated variable. The primary loop then acts on the process, including the secondary loop. An example is controlling a furnace's feed outlet temperature with fuel gas flow as the manipulated variable and fuel gas pressure in the secondary loop. Cascade control is efficient if the secondary loop is faster than the primary loop and is used for manipulated variables with large inertia. The procedure to implement cascade control involves adjusting the primary controller's PV to its SP, then the secondary controller's LSP to the primary's PV, and finally transferring the controllers to automatic control.

CASCADE CONTROL

1. Definition
Decreases the effect, on the controlled variable, of disturbances which act on the manipulated
variable (YR)
Includes two loops:
One secondary control loop
Which decreases the effect of the disturbances acting on the manipulated variable
This loop receives the output of the primary controller as set point
One primary control loop
Which acts on the process, including the secondary loop

2. Example: Feed outlet temperature control on a furnace

PV: Feed outlet temperature To
YR: Fuel gas flow Qg
Z1: Fuel gas pressure Pg

3. Characteristics
Efficient only if secondary loop is faster that primary loop
Used on manipulated transfer with large inertia

4. Procedure to transfer the loop in cascade mode

1. Be sure C1 and C2 are on manual and C2 on LSP
2. Adjust PV = SP on C1 by acting on Y2
3. Adjust LSP = PV on C2 and transfer C2 on automatic
4. Adjust Y1 = LSP on C2, then transfer C2 on RSP or CAS
5. Check SP = PV on C1 and transfer C1 on automatic
