Curriculum content description: (SCSA)
Mixtures, including solutions, contain a combination of pure substances that can be
separated using a range of techniques (ACSSU113)
Students prior knowledge and experience:
Pure substances contain one type of substance
Mixtures contain more than one type of substance, physically mixed together.
Solutions are mixtures where one substance is dissolved in the other; clear.
Solutes can be dissolve in solvents. If dissolved, they are called soluble, if not, insoluble.
Learning purpose:
Students understand that there are factors responsible for why solutes dissolve more
easily in a solvent; more solute can dissolve in hot water than cold.

1. Introduction:

Quick review of previous lesson.

Students answer 5 questions on A6 piece of paper and then exchange it with


a partner to mark it.
Question 5 encourages students to think about new concept taught in this
lesson.

2. Sequence of learning experiences:

Concentration: 2 slides demonstrating that the amount of solute in the


10:05-10:15 solution determines whether it is concentrated or dilute.

Saturated: When no more solute can be dissolved in a solution, it is said to be


saturated.

Activity: Testing the Effect of Temperature on Solubility


Students get out the experiment setup and results sheets.

10:15-10:35 Quick recap of the experimental procedure and safety instructions.

Students collect materials from two stations. Safety glasses are collected from
the back of the room.

Students begin testing. (teacher walks around assisting, questioning, and


helping with hot water)

Pack Up: Bell to get students attention.
