EXPLAIN:
This activity requires your detective skills to analyse the information provided in a
graph and do some clever problem solving. Your assignment is to work out what
this graph could be about because some vital information is missing.
To carry out this investigation you need to look at the column graph below which
displays some 'Mystery Data'.
By studying the graph you can see that:
The vertical axis (the left edge of the graph) is marked in centimetres.
The horizontal axis (the bottom edge of the graph) is labelled 'a' to 'm'.
There is no title for this graph. At present it is just called "Mystery Data".

ELABORATE:
Engage students in discussion around graphs and how they represent different
information, refer back to the mystery graph as an example and graph with key
scale in previous lesson.
Give students ideas of what the graph might be about by highlighting different
features in the graph. Ask questions such as why do you think the columns are like
this. What information could possibly suit this mystery graph.

EVALUATE:
Prompt students for discussion to share what they thought the mystery graph was
about and for them to justify their answers, such as why did you think this, how
did you apply this information in the graph etc.

REFLECTION
Timing: Timing was good
Engagement: This activity had students engaged as it was like a game they had to investigate
different information to apply it to the graph
Behaviour: Students showed positive engagement in this lesson. While walking around the room I
noticed students working collaboratively together to work out what the graph could be out.
Lesson Content: Informative
What would I change: I could have had provided the students with another mystery graph for them
to complete and possibly at a higher level as I think students were ready for this
