Traffic Engineering in 3G Network Using Layer 3 DSCP

This document discusses using differentiated services code point (DSCP) values to enable traffic engineering and quality of service (QoS) in a 3G network. It provides DSCP, VLAN priority, and MPLS experimental bit mappings for different 3G services like GSM, HSPA, RRC, and streaming. Currently in ZTE networks, DSCP to VLAN priority mapping is not enabled, treating all VLAN packets as default priority 0. To improve QoS in shared IP platforms where different service traffic aggregates, the document recommends enabling the DSCP to VLAN to MPLS priority mapping.

DSCP to VLAN mapping is not enabled presently in ZTE & HW Network. Presenlty all VLAN
packets are having default priority 0. This method is good when we have a dedicated separate IP
network for IuB interface, because RNC will take care of packet scheduling based on service
priority. But in a shared, multiple services IP Platform, traffic from different services are
aggregating through the PTN network (BB Traffic, Wimax traffic, 3G, Leased Ckts, OLT traffic
etc.). Hence for improving the service QoS need to be enabled in this network through

L3 DSCP>L2 VLAN Priority>MPLS EXP
