Discussion: Thermal Conductivity of Liquids

The document discusses three topics: thermal conductivity of liquids decreases with increasing temperature, heat transfer through lagged pipes is affected by heat loss to surroundings and end effects, and using a spherical sheet instead of plates helps avoid errors from end effects when measuring thermal conductivity of insulating powder.

Thermal conductivity of liquids

Temperature is measured at both ends to account for error that may arise due to the
transient state. The average temperature is then used for the calculations
Water is used for maintaining the cold plate temperature because it has a very high heat
capacity.
With an increase in temperature, there is a decrease in the thermal conductivity of
liquids

Heat transfer through lagged pipe

We assume that there is no heat lost in the transfer from inner to outer cylinder.
The difference in heat observed between the theoretical and experimental values is
because there is loss of heat to the surrounding.
We have also neglected the end effects, which leads to some errors in the calculated
values.
Whenever we are insulating any pipe we must make sure that the radius of the
insulation is less than the critical radius of insulation otherwise more heat is lost inspite
of adding insulation due to high amount of heat loss by concvection.

Thermal conductivity of insulating powder

We are using a spherical sheet instead of plates to avoid the errors that arise due to the
end effects.
