Edward Winston Watson was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England on

6th May 1945. At the age of twelve (1957) he won Special Merit in the nationwide
Fry Painting Competition. The Chairman of the Adjudicators was R[eginald]
R[obert] Tomlinson ARCA, RBA (1885-1978). R. R. Tomlinson, the Senior
Inspector of Art at the London County Council from 1925, was a pioneer in
promoting young artists and at the time his King Penguin no.16 (first edition,
1944), Children as Artists was highly influential. The prize gave Winston free
access to a two-year part-time Saturday morning course at the Ryland Memorial
School of Arts and Crafts, West Bromwich, consisting of art appreciation, art
theory, and the history of art, drawing and painting.
Since September 1969 Winston Watson has lived in Switzerland, currently in
Wilhof in the canton of Zurich.
