FreeBody Diagrams Rev2

A free body diagram (FBD) is a vector diagram showing the external forces acting on a body, including contact forces like normal force, applied force, and friction, as well as non-contact forces like gravity. An example FBD shows a body being pushed across a frictionless floor, with the gravitational force from Earth and applied pushing force shown, and the normal force of the floor acting perpendicular to the surface.

Free Body Diagrams

A FBD is a vector diagram of a body showing the external forces acting on it.
Q: What creates the external forces on a body?
A: Other bodies
Q: What kind of external forces are considered?
A: i. Contact forces (FN, Fapplied, Friction)
ii. Non-contact forces (Fg)

Ex: For a body being pushed across a frictionless horizontal floor.

Step 1
Q: What non-contact forces should we consider?
A: Fg (from the earth)
Q: What bodies are in contact with the object?
A: You Applied force, Fapplied
The floor Ffloor
(Note: Fg always points downward. In the absence of friction
Ffloor should only act perpendicular to the floor.)

Step 2
Sketch the body and show the forces
