Excercise - Part 3

This document contains 3 exercises related to wastewater treatment plant processes and sludge handling calculations: 1. A high rate aeration system produces 1140 m3/d of waste sludge at 3300 mg/L solids. This sludge is thickened to 3% solids by dissolved air flotation. 2. A treatment plant has primary and secondary treatment followed by sludge mixing, thickening, and anaerobic digestion. Given influent characteristics and plant details, sketch the process flow and calculate sludge loadings and thickener performance. 3. The thickened sludge from exercise 2 undergoes anaerobic digestion. Given organic content, conversion rates, and digested

Exercise (Part 3)

1. A high rate aeration system produces 1140 m3/d of waste sludge. The sludge is wasted directly
from the aerator and has a solids content of 3300 mg/L. This sludge is thickened by a dissolved air
flotation unit to 3% solids. Determine the volume of the thickened sludge.

2. A wastewater-treatment plant consists of primary treatment followed by a completely mixed

activated-sludge secondary system. The primary and secondary sludges are mixed, thickened, and
treated by anaerobic digestion. The system is shown schematically in the accompanying figure. The
wastewater, treatment plant, and sludge characteristics of interest are given below.

Wastewater Treatment plant Sludges

Influent SS = 240 mg/L Dia. of primary clarifier = 25m Primary sludge = 3.8% solids
3
Influent BOD = 210 mg/L Aeration basin volume = 3600 m Waste secondary sludge =
0.95% solids
Effluent BOD = 10 mg/L MLSS in aeration = 2800 mg/L Thickened sludge = 2.6%
solids
Flow = 14,350 m3/d

(a) Sketch the process flow of the wastewater & sludge treatment;
Determine (b) the solids loading to the digesters (kg/d and m 3/d), (c) the percent volume
reduction in the thickener, and (d) the volume of supernatant returned from the thickener to the
primary clarifier.

3. The thickened sludge in Q2 is processed in a standard rate anaerobic digester. The digestion period
is 30d and the sludge must be stored for 3 months between final disposal events. Organic content of
the sludge is 75% and 55% of the organics is converted to gaseous or liquid end products. The solid
content of the digested sludge is 6%. Determine (a) the required reactor volume, (b) the volatile
solids loading rate (kg/m3.d) and the gas production (m3/day).
