Kirby STEM: GOOD
Recognising and building simple TEST: /18 Kirby could practice his simple machines more regularly. Having missed several lessons in STEM time - meant that he misunderstood what each machines. Design, build, test EGG:6/10 simple or compound machine could be used for. A good effort, though assessment. more practice/understanding required.
Kirby constructed an interesting example of a compound machine. He was able to use a minimum of 2 simple machines which formed a compound that could throw an egg, though it was unsuccessful in throwing the egg, it was still a well-planned and thought-out machine which covered all of the STEM assessment requirements.
Baxter STEM: Very Good/EXCELLENT Answered all of the questions Test:17.5/18 More work on Compound machines? Has grasped STEM and simple machines well. correctly, though he did not give the Egg:7/10 Almost 100% accurate name of the simple machines used to make the compound machine. Baxter obviously listened well during STEM lessons - answering almost all Overall well done! of the questions accurately in the STEM theory based test. Excellent work Baxter! Recognising and building simple machines. Design, build, test Baxter always loved working in each and every STEM lesson. He truly loves assessment. to design and construct machines. Regardless of the group he worked with, he would always quietly take charge, yet ensure everyone would input on each design. Unfortunately in the final STEM egg challenge Baxters group was unable to complete their machine in the given time, largely as the machine was not physically strong enough to throw the egg. Overall, Baxter did try his best and his groups machine did use 2 or more simple machines. Well done Baxter.
Heiki-Lu STEM: SATISFACTORY Correctly achieved the /18 Heiki needs to practice her simple machine knowledge more regularly. Considering we have been covering simple machines during the majority of lesson/assessment. Some areas Egg: 5/10 term 2 Heiki should be able to give more examples of simple machines. needing improvement: inclined plane This may be partly due to being away through 1-2 double STEM lessons. and wedge. Heiki-Lu and Lilah worked well during the egg STEM challenge. They did Recognising and building simple however run out of time during this lesson, therefore they were unable to machines. Design, build, test test their machine. Heiki was also unsure as to what simple machines were assessment. in her compound machine, at first, though given time she was able to describe and draw these examples on the board when asked- a lever, pulley and wedge were used. Claire STEM: VERY GOOD Correctly achieved the Test:14/18 Claire needs to focus on pulleys to recognise what they are used for. Putting the examples of pulleys in the incorrect column threw her off in lesson/assessment. Some areas Egg:6/10 the assignment. needing improvement: Wheel & No compound machine picture. Axel/pulley. No example of a wheel and axel drawn. Possible misinterpretation of the pulley diagram. Recognising and building simple Though these were written in the wrong columns it was still possible to machines. Design, build, test recognise her responses. assessment. Egg thrower: In the egg challenge Addisons group worked well to create a machine that used at least 2 of 2 required simple machines, though it was unable to successfully fracture an egg. Finn STEM: GOOD Recognising and building simple Test:10/18 Though Finn did pass the simple machine assessment, he was unsure as to what some of the questions required him to do overall. It is important that machines. Design, build, test Egg: 9/10 he rereads each question and focuses on the task of a simple assessment. machine/compound machine.
Finns ability to apply practical knowledge in building and construction is very evident in STEM construction time. He used all and more of the simple machines. He and his partner used their gained knowledge during the term to accurately create a machine that could crack and throw an egg successfully. Dylan STEM: GOOD Test passed Test: 14/18 Dylan worked well to recognise what each simple machine can do. He may need to reread some questions particularly the simple machines that are Egg thrower pass though Egg: 5/10 present in a compound machine. incomplete/untested. more machines required! Throughout the egg thrower exercise Dylan did not use his time effectively to build the machine on time. They (as a group) ran out of time. Their Recognising and building simple machine was very complicated and did not make use of all 4 simple machines. Design, build, test machines. assessment. Ryder STEM: GOOD
TEST: 9/18 Ryder really enjoyed working in the STEM lessons, focussing his attention on working in teams and individually, however, he does fall off task, EGG: 6/10 regularly needing reminders to continue working.
Ryder did at first struggle with remembering the uses of each simple machines, but with time he was able to apply this gained knowledge and apply it to building and designing a compound machine. It was sometimes evident that Ryder really enjoyed the design process, but lesser so the construction steps. Good effort this term in STEM Ryder! Ryder: Make sure you focus all of your attention on the task! Rose STEM: BELOW SATISFACTORY Test: 8.5/18 Rose, at times seemed reluctant to focus on her work at times, which is evident in her test results. It is important that Rose recognises that trying Egg: 5/10 her best is often what is required to receive a more rewarding outcome, especially in theory based tasks.
Rose did at times fall off task during the building time in the EGG thrower challenge, which resulted in a compound machine that was largely built by one student, rather then being a team effort. Towards the second half of the lesson Rose did begin to work as a team, though the machine was largely finished by this stage. Ensuring their machine was strong enough to throw an egg unfortunately resulted in an unfinished compound machine.
Lukas STEM: GOOD Mastered some areas inclined plane, Test: 10/18 Areas needing improvement: Wedge being confused for inclined plane.
pulley Egg: 7/10 Could not think of a final simple machine or any examples. 3/4 simple machines. STEM Egg challenge successfully created machine. Egg challenge: Created a machine that was able to throw, and break an egg successfully. Though could have worked together more effectively with partner they were successful as a team. Machine used 3 of 3 simple machines correctly. Addison STEM: GOOD Successfully passed the simple Test:15/18 Addison worked well throughout the STEM simple machine lessons. Overall, she was able to successfully answer each question, though machine test Egg:6/10 mistakenly placed several of the answers in the wrong box, which lost her some marks. Successfully completed the egg She was able to recognise the use of a wedge within a pair of scissors (a thrower machine, though it was compound machine) and that a door is also a compound machine with unable to fracture the egg. several machines in total. well done Addison!
In the egg challenge Addisons group worked well to create a machine that used 2 of 2 required simple machines, though it was unable to successfully fracture an egg. Ryan STEM: SATISFACTORY
Test: /18 Ryan missed several STEM lessons, which meant he did find it difficult to catch up on the simple and compound machines that were focused on in Egg: 5/10 previous lessons. While his test results (theory based assessment) could have been improved with practice, Ryan did really enjoy building compound machines (practical based assessment) he was therefore able to apply some gained knowledge and an obvious love for construction into several of the STEM lessons. Theory is evidently and area that could be improved - with practice.
Dakota STEM: SATISFACTORY
Test: /18 Dakota tried her best in the theory based test, though did find it difficult to apply her simple machine knowledge to the test. Missing one main lesson Egg: 4/10 also means she missed some simple machine learning time.
Dakota was eager to work as a group of three in the STEM egg chellenge, though it seemed that she was off task regularly within this building/construction lesson - which led to only one student predominantly building the groups compound machine.
Esther STEM: EXCELLENT Overall Esther was able to recognise Test:18/18 Congratulations Esther in your machine test! answered all of the questions accurately! Perhaps you could have added more detail to the examples ALL of the simple machines in the Egg:9/10 column, but overall well done! assessment, though may need to practice what these machines do. Egg challenge: Created a machine that was able to throw, and break an egg successfully. Esther completed the machine and design the machine Esther worked well with Lukas to worked well, though a hard surface was required in order to break the egg. create a simple machine into a Used all 3 simple machines successfully. compound machine to throw and Machine used 3 of 3 simple machines correctly. break an egg successfully. Great work!
Edan STEM: VERY GOOD Test: 18/18 Edan did very well in the theory based assessment, recognising and answering all of the required questions accurately. It is therefore evident Egg: 5/10 that he truly enjoyed and grasped the theory side of the simple and compound machines.
During the compound machine assessment both Edan and Dylan worked well in creating a design, however their final design was very complicated and a portion of the creating time was spent off task, rather then making use of their time. The design ideas were interesting and could have worked if the final STEM lesson was spent on task. Good try, just not executed accurately in the end. Lilah STEM: GOOD Test:10/18 Lilah seemed to enjoy several lessons during STEM this term, though did at times misunderstand the overall task. Or was uncertain as to how to Egg: 5/10 accurately build her designs. With this said, Lilah did make an effort in trying to work in groups with others. Lilah needs to practice her simple machines and ensure she tries her best to build her design ideas - drawing her ides then trying to build this drawing is often easier to draw then to build. Good try this term in STEM Lilah!
