1. Overview
RecentlyEffectiveAreahasbecomemorepopularasamodemeasure.Unlikesomeoftheothermode
measures,EffectiveAreacanbedefined,andmakessense,foranymode.Inthisrelease,theeffective
areaiscalculatedforeveryselectedmode,andtheresultsaredisplayedinatablewiththeothermode
measures.ThisreleaseisthefirstversionofOptiFiberfora64bitoperatingsystem.Thisreleasealso
fillsacoupleofomissionsinthedocumentation.

2. New Features
2.1. OF 2 Display Effective Mode Area in the Table
CalculateEffectiveModeAreaforallmodesanddisplaytheresultasanewcolumninthetableinthe
CalculatedResultsdialogbox.

2.2. Vector Mode Amplitude display

Whenvectormodeswereintroducedinversion2.0,onlyoneofthefieldcomponentswasdisplayed.For
highindexcontrastwaveguides,bothfieldcomponentscanhavesignificantvaluesandtherefore
showingonlyonecomponentisnotverymeaningful.Startinginversion2.2,vectormodeswillnowbe
displayedbyshowingtheelectricfieldvectoramplitudeinstead.Thedisplaywillshowthevector
amplitude

andthatvaluewillbenormalizedsuchthatthemaximumis1.0.

3. Enhancements, Fixes, and Corrections


3.1. OF3 Modal Index and Group Index are not defined
ModalIndexandGroupIndexareusedanddisplayedinOptiFiber,buttheywerenotdefinedinthe
TechnicalBackground.Definitionshavenowbeenwrittenforthese.

3.2. OF4 Need Details about Polar Angle


IntheDecompositiondialogbox,whentheInputfieldisGaussianandtheoffsetX0is0,itispossibleto
enteranangleindegreesinthePolarfield.Themanualnowspecifiesthattheinputisfromair.
