LITERATURE REVIEW_
2.1_ INTRODUCTION
Boli Khela is a traditional form of wrestling in Bangladesh specifically take place at the port city
Chittagong. Boli Khela was introduced in the early 19th century by Abdul Jabbar Saodagar. His
concept was to cultivate a sport that would prepare the youth to fight against British rule in order to
self-defense without weapons.
Broad appeal for the sport began at the end of the First World War but subsided at the end of the
Second World War.
Its considered as a national game of the district. It is one of the age oldest traditions of the
Chittagong since 107 years. It is a form of combat sport involving
grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and
takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds.
The sporting event, held in the first month of the Bengali year, at
the last of chaitra shongkranti and take place at Laldighi
Maidan .

denotes a game. So, Boli Khela means game of the powerful
person.
Previously in Indian subcontinent, there used to be a game named Molla juddho (iv) which used to
take place between 2 person but played by holding stick in hands. After that a new game got
introduced which used to be named as Kusti (v) and only few participants could participate
belongs to that very area. But no game sutained for a long time period as Boli khela ,for 2 months
long . Its estimated that it was originated by the Arabic subcontinent people.
During the early 19th century, people of Chittagong used to go for treading in Myanmar due to their
livelihood. During the month of Boishakh they used to get back to their land just to attend, enjoy and
participate in Bolikhela. The masters who used to bet on their bolis, they used to make 2-3 gold
meddels and silver meddels for rewarding the winning boli. And make the publicity of their
participation in boli khela even by making posters of their bolis. By finalising the date and time a
person with 7-8 more, used to give an announcement of the upcoming boli khela with shanai
.And the participated bolis used to get invitation card as honorary members of the game. On the
day of the game, the bolis used to make a dramatic entry with 8-10 of junior bolis and a group of
people welcoming them with dhol (vi) and shanai (vii) .

Earlier, there used to be a game taken place between two junior bolis , the senior alumny of the
game used to inaugrate the game. The game used to go on untill one boli doesnt defeat another.
The winner used to dance with the tune of dhol and used to get rewarded with the gold meddel
and people used to bade him to home by playing dhol shanai. The master used to get all the
money which both masters bet on the game.
Previously among 2-4 villages used to arrange for 1-2 boli khela per year. But, after the 2nd world
war it got subsided .
The arena is either a circular or square shape, measuring at least fourteen to twenty feet across.
Rather than using modern mats, Boli wrestlers train and compete on dirt floors. Match started in a
sandy wrestling ground. Each year, Boli Khela attracts new participates and fans because the sheer
enjoyment of the sport is not only contagious for local enthusiasts but inspires tourists to Bangladesh
an opportunity to get a glimpse of an exciting and unique event. Fans of many countries come every
year to see Boli khela.
This century-old sport of Boli Khela has over fifty participants that take part in the game during the
festival with half of the wrestlers advancing to the second round. In recent years the game has been
dominated by two men, Didarul Alam and Marmar Sing who have concurrently won the
championships together.
As the conclusion of the championship games both men resume their normal activities while waiting
for the next games the following year.
The event starts at afternoon in a festive mood
with the music of 'Dabor' (one kind of folk
drum) and 'Sanai' (folk flute). Time of the each
match is 2530 minutes. If both competitors
agree, the length of the final match may be
extended up to 1015 minute .
