Advantages of AODV

AODV is an adaptive routing protocol that responds quickly to topological changes in highly dynamic networks, supports both unicast and multicast transmissions for nodes in motion. It has low setup delays, does not add overhead to data packets, and scales well to large numbers of mobile nodes, though it generates many control packets when links break and has high processing demands.

Advantages of AODV:

AODV responds very quickly to all the topological changes which affect the
active routes, since it is adaptabive to highly dynamic networks.

AODV also supports both unicast as well as multicast packet transmissions, even
for nodes in constant movement.

In AODV the setup delay is very low for connections and detection of the latest
route to the destination.

AODV does not put any additional overheads on data packets as it does not make
use of source routing.

AODV protocol is a flat routing protocol. It doesnt need any central

administrative system to handle the routing process.

AODV is loop free, self-starting and scales to a large number of mobile nodes.

AODV Disadvantages:

A large number of control packets are generated when a link breakage

occurs. These control packets increase the congestion in the active route.

AODV has a high processing demand.

A large share of data is consumed by AODV.

AODV takes very long time for building the routing table.

There is a possibility of any valid route getting expired and it is difficult to

determine a reasonable expiry time.

When size of the network becomes large, various performance metric start
decreasing.
