Mapúa University: Shop Practice No.7

This document discusses tapering using a compound rest on a lathe. It provides instructions on how to set up and use the compound rest to cut a taper. The objective is to practice tapering and make items like center punches or plumb bobs. Key steps include setting the compound rest at the half taper angle, mounting and securing the workpiece, and taking cuts using the cross feed to gradually reduce the diameter. Questions are provided to test the student's understanding of tapering concepts and procedures.

SHOP PRACTICE NO.7

Tapering Process Using Compound Rest

ANGELES, Marison C.

ME-2

Group 04

Engr. Jose V. Hernandez

Instructor
OBJECTIVE:
1. To use the compound rest for taper turning.
2. To be able to perform short taper with the compound rest.
3. To be able to make center punch, or a plumb bob.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

The main purpose of the compound rest is to turn it on angle position for cutting. It is
also used for turning and short tapering this is due to limited movement of the slide. Tapering is
a gradual reduction in diameter over the length of the work. Taper in most practice give as taper
of so many inches per foot.

MATERIALS
1 pc. Round bar

TOOLS TO BE USED
- Lathe machine and its accessories
- Taper Gage

PROCEDURE
1. Mount the work in chuck or between centers and check it to see that is is in alignment
with the normal centerline of the machine.
2. Slide the taper attachment to such a position that the sling shoe will travel the full length
of the taper without extending over either end of the taper bar, and lock the bad dog to
hold the attachment in this position.
3. Loosen the clam screws, which hold the taper bar in position on its supporting member,
as well as the clam screw, which binds the sling shoe at the cross slide extension.
4. Set the taper by means of the graduations to the number of degrees, or the taper per foot.
5. Tighten the taper bar clam screws.
6. Set the compound rest at right angles to the centerline of the machine. Mount a right hand
turning tool in the tool post. Set the tool on dead center.
7. Remove the screw, which normally holds the cross feed nut to the across side.. Be sure to
cover the hole so that chips do not fall into the screw channels, then move the cross slide
in by hand until the cutting tool is near the position required for the first cut.
8. Move the carriage to the right until the cutting tool is about an inch away from the end of
the work in the direction of the tailstock. (This is so that any play between the taper bar
and sliding shoe will be removed when the carriage moves to the left to take the cut and
before the tool reaches the work.
9. Tighten the clamping screw which binds the sliding shoe to the cross slide extension. Oil
the bearing surfaces of the taper bar.

QUESTIONS:
1. What is tapering?

- Tapering is a gradual reduction in the thickness, width, or diameter of an object or

section. Also, the overall reduction in thickness, width, or diameter, per unit length.

2. What are other methods can be used for tapering?

- The other methods are form tool method, Tailstock set over method, Compound rest
method, and taper turning attachment method.

3. What is taper gage?

- A taper gage measures holes and slot sizes. It is quick to use, and very accurate.

4. How do you adjust the feed cut?

- Use the cross feed lever to adjust the feed cut.

5. How do you set the angular displacement of the feed cut?

- Offsetting the tailstock and using the auto feed cut can set the angular displacement of
the feed cut.
6. What kind is the setting of the compound rest in tapering process?

The setting of the compound rest is done by swiveling the rest at half taper angle, if this is
already known. If the diameter of the small and large end and Length of taper are known,
the half taper angle can be calculated from the equation {Tan = (D-d) / 2L}.

7. How do you test the angle of taper?

- Use a sine bar set to the desired included angle, place the part on it, and compare both
ends using a DTI or height gauge. If the part is correct the height of each end should be
the same. If your tolerance is .0003" it will easily be visible.

8. What is the tool used to produce a short and abrupt tapers?

- Formed tools is a tool used to produce a short and abrupt tapers.

9. Can you use the offset tailstock for tapering? How?

- Yes, offsetting the tailstock is the procedure so that you can use the offset tailstock for
tapering.

10. How is taper classified?

- Taper is classified according to the degree of taper.

DISCUSSION
In order to understand taper turning, first you have to understand the general meaning of
Taper. Taper is a gradual decrease in thickness or width of an elongated object. It is to diminish or
reduce in thickness towards one end to become or cause to become narrower towards one end.
Now you have a general idea what taper is. So, you can better understand the Taper Turning now.
Taper turning is when the diameter of a piece changes uniformly, from one end to the other, the
job is said to be tapered. Taper turning is a machining operation in which the gradual reduction in
diameter from one part of a cylindrical workpiece to another part is carried out. There can be
external or internal tapers. If a workpiece is tapered on the outside, it is known as external taper;
if it is tapered on the inside, it is known as internal taper.
CONCLUSION
The compound rest method is particularly useful for turning short, steep tapers. To do so,
the rest must be set at the angle with the centerline of the taper to be cut. This is difficult because
the graduated dial on the compound rest is usually measured in 1 degree increments, not minutes
andseconds. The machinist can set the rest at 8 and approximate 17 minutes (slightly more than
degree), and make trial cuts, measure carefully, and readjust the rest until the desired taper is
cut. In this activity, students were able to use the compound rest for taper turning. Also, students
are able to perform short taper with the compound rest. Finally, students are able to make center
punch, or a plumb bob for a meeting.

RECOMMENDATION
I would recommend to consume the time properly by having proper communication to each
teammates and divide each part simultaneously. This would result to a faster and more successful
product. Also, students would need to be more careful in every part since some tools would be
used for the first time.
