Spectrum Interpretation & Vibration Analysis

This document provides examples of vibration spectra that could indicate different machine problems. It notes that the spectra are probability based and field testing is still needed to confirm diagnoses. Key types of machine faults that may appear in vibration spectra include unbalance, misalignment, bearing issues, structural looseness, resonance, critical speeds, belt problems, rolling element bearing issues, motor problems, gear problems, and fluid-related issues. The document stresses that spectra interpretation provides assumptions and estimates rather than definitive diagnoses.

SPECTRUM INTERPRETATION
The following images are designed to provide typical examples of the vibration spectra that will result from different problems a
machine might experience. They are probability based, so field testing should always be performed regardless of how 'sure' you are
of the diagnosis.

Remember that any diagnosis made from plot interpretation can be essentially be characterised as an assumption based on an
estimate.

Unbalance Misalignment Cocked Bearings and Shafts Bent @ Structural Looseness

Bearing

Bearing Looseness Housing Distortion: Soft Foot, Piping Structural Resonance Critical Speeds
Stress, etc.

Belt Problems: Wear, Resonance, etc. Belt Problems: Pulley Alignment Belt Problems: Eccentric Pulley / Bent Sleeve Bearings (Looseness/Rubs)
Shaft

Oil Whirl Rolling Element Bearings Hydraulic / Aerodynamic Pump Cavitation / Flow Turbulence

AC Motor Problems: Broken / Cracked AC Motor Problems: Uneven Air Gap AC Motor Problems: Loose Rotor Bars / DC Motor Problems: Drive Problems
Rotor Bars Windings

DC Motor Problems: Speed Fluctuations Gear Problems: Misalignment Gear Problems: Wear, Eccentricity,
Backlash
