This paper analyzes the propagation modes of step index optical fibers using finite element methods. It presents the basic equations that govern electromagnetic wave propagation in optical fibers. The paper simulates the electric and magnetic field distributions for various fiber types, including single mode, multimode, curved, and joined fibers. It finds that single mode fiber supports one linearly polarized propagation mode, while multimode fiber supports multiple independent linearly polarized modes. Future work will simulate nonlinear effects like Faraday effect, Kerr effect and Pockels effect in optical fibers.

Conclusion

According to the simulation through the single-mode

fiber, the wave is transmitted in one linearly polarizated
mode
Through the multimode fiber more light waves can
pass, but each with its particular linearly polarized mode
These simulations will be developed to simulate Faraday
