ANSI 13.1 National Fire Protection Association has addressed piping labels in the 1999 edition. The
standard states that the gas content of the medical gas piping shall be identified by appropriate
labeling with the name and pressure of the gas. Labeling of the piping should appear every 20 feet and
at least once in each room and each story the piping traverses.
The color codes recommended by the NFPA are as follows: Gas Service Colors (Background/Text)
Medical Air Yellow/black
Carbon Dioxide Grey/black or grey/white
Helium Brown/white
Nitrogen Black/white
Nitrous Oxide Blue/white
Oxygen Green/white or white/green

background/minor gas for text Nonmedical air Yellow & white diagonal stripe/black Nonmedical
vacuum White & black diagonal stripe black boxed Laboratory air Yellow and white
checkerboard/black Laboratory vacuum White and black checkerboard/black boxed
