Brainpop Instuctional Software Lesson

This document provides a lesson plan for a 1st grade math lesson on making sense of word problems using the BrainPop tutorial. The lesson aims to help students understand key words that indicate which operation to use in word problems and follow the problem solving steps of "understand, plan, solve, check." The teacher will introduce the lesson by playing the BrainPop video on the SmartBoard and pausing to discuss examples. Students will then practice word problems and quiz using iPads before reinforcing the problem solving steps.

teacher will skip the part of the video that involves multiplying/dividing because we
will be focusing on 1st grade standards involving adding and subtracting. If a
student seems so grasp the concept of word problems with subtracting and adding
early and finishes early, then the teacher can introduce basic multiplication in word
problems to the student. The video goes over key words to look out for in word
problems to help the student figure out which mathematical operation to do. The
teacher will pause the video to help the students walk through a math problem.
Students can discuss their interpretation of the word problem to each other and
then the teacher. The teacher will ask, How did you know this problem was
subtraction? The student may respond with saying because it is asking how many
are left after 3 were taken away and taken away is a clue that tells me to subtract.

Near the end of the video the steps to chose the right operation are gone over.
These steps are understand, plan, solve, check. These steps will be written on the
board an emphasized throughout this lesson to help the students memorize the
steps. After the video is done students can use devises such as iPads to work on the
easy and hard quiz that Brain Pop has to offer. This lesson is expected to take
approximately 30 minutes for two days (including the video, discussion, practice,
and quizzing on iPad.)
