Ir is. with feelings of the highest gratification that Raphael is enabled to present a° translation of so highly curious and interesting a work.as the Pythoness to the British public. The original MS. of. this extraordinary book is traced to the possession of the Empress Jose- phine, who, during her residence im the Isle of France, had the whole of her future destiny divulged to her be- fore shesailed to Europe. And itis a well-authenticated fact that Napoleon repeatedly ‘consulted this work in matters of vital importance, an extract from it having even been found ia his carriage. after the battle of Leipzic. : : . Form OF OBTAINING THE ORACTLAR RESPONSES OF THE PYTHONESS. It will be observed that the first twelve pages contain 144 questions, relating to all the casualties and events of human life, divided into twelve houses, each having a separate and distinct class of twelve questions. It will also be observed that the remainder of the work is divided into twelve circles, each circle containing the sixteen geomantic oracles of twelve answers each, thus forming 2304 answers to the 144 questions, a far greater number than is contained in any similar work ever pub- lished. The questions of the first house are answered. by the oracles of circle the first; the queries of the « ‘second house by the second circle; and so with the others. : The two pases of geomantic cards or figures are to be torn from the book and carefully cut into squares all of the same size ; the two pages will thus produce thirty-iv PREFACE. two squares, which are to be placed in a vase or reticule, and thoroughly mingled. When the question is resolved upon, let the officiating person hold the vase or reticule in her left hand, and allow the applicant to take (with- out seeing them) one of the figures out, which will de- cide the Geomantic Oracle under which the answer isto be sought, as in the following examples. Example of the First House and Cirele. Quzxstion VII. ‘What does the beginning of my present adventure prognosticate ? Upon selecting an emblem from the mystic vase, the Geomantic Oracle drawn was Acquisitio. As this ques- tion is the seventh question of the first house, we refer to the Oracle of Acquisitio, circle the first. Now, as the question is the seventh of the first house, so will the answer be found in the seventh response of the Oracle, which is—‘‘ This geomantic omen is not good for the sale of any goods; in all other matters it promises gain.’’ Example of the Second House and Circle. Question IX. ‘Will the messenger I have sent be successful, and re- turn with good news? The emblem drawn was Fortuna Minor, and, as this was the ninth question of the second house, we turn to eircle the second, and there under the oracle Fortuna Minor, at the ninth answer, is the following—‘‘ 9. If” the messenger is trustworthy, you may expect success from the errand.”’ Lxample of the Third House and Circle. Question VIII. Will the journey itself be profitable and agreeable, or not? And upon referring to circle the third, Oracle Puer, at the eighth answer, we find—‘‘ It will present to you many agreeables, and be likewise profitable to you in your affairs.’?RAPHAEL'S PYTHONESS OF THE EAST.
