Lab Sheet Turning

This document provides instructions for a lab experiment on turning processes using a lathe machine. Students are divided into groups to manufacture a part based on provided sketches and specifications. The objectives are to identify turning and drilling processes, operate a lathe machine, and understand planning and procedures related to manufacturing. Safety procedures and evaluation criteria are also outlined. Students will gain experience producing rotational parts, be evaluated on their machined product and submitted lab report.

3. To get an ideas about planning, procedure and relate it with actual industries
culture.

1.2 INTRODUCTION

Turning is a form of machining, a material removal process, which is used to create rotational
parts by cutting away unwanted material. The turning process requires a turning machine or
lathe, work piece, fixture, and cutting tool. The work piece is a piece of pre-shaped material
that is secured to the fixture, which itself is attached to the turning machine, and allowed to
rotate at high speeds. The cutter is typically a single-point cutting tool that is also secured in
the machine, although some operations make use of multi-point tools. The cutting tool feeds
into the rotating work piece and cuts away material in the form of small chips to create the
desired shape.

Turning is used to produce rotational, typically axi-symmetric, parts that have many features,
such as holes, grooves, threads, tapers, various diameter steps, and even contoured surfaces as
shown in Figure 1. Parts that are fabricated completely through turning often include
components that are used in limited quantities, perhaps for prototypes, such as custom designed
shafts and fasteners. Turning is also commonly used as a secondary process to add or refine
features on parts that were manufactured using a different process. Due to the high tolerances
and surface finishes that turning can offer, it is ideal for adding precision rotational features to
a part whose basic shape has already been formed.

Turning machines can be found in a variety of sizes and designs. While most lathes are
horizontal turning machines, vertical machines are sometimes used, typically for large diameter
work pieces. Turning machines can also be classified by the type of control that is offered. A
manual lathe requires the operator to control the motion of the cutting tool during the turning
operation. Turning machines are also able to be computer controlled, in which case they are
referred to as a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe. CNC lathes rotate the work piece and
move the cutting tool based on commands that are preprogrammed and offer very high
precision. In this variety of turning machines, the main components that enable the work piece
to be rotated and the cutting tool to be fed into the work piece remain the same. These
components include as shown in Figure 2.

1.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

In this project, you are divided into groups of 3 to 4 people. Details of the project are as
follows:

1. As supplier, customer request to prepare part as per below sketch.

2. Refer Appendix A (technical drawing) for details dimensions and necessary

information.
3. This part will assemble with milling part and become assembly part before deliver to
customer.
4. Delivery of product must submit with technical report for their approval (quality)
process before proceed with mass / batch production.
MACHINE AND MATERIAL SELECTION

Customer require details information in order to meet their specifications and fast
countermeasure (decision) when problem occurs during assemble with others part, or
during parts operation. Details technical data as follows:
1. Material type.
2. Material properties.
3. Machine type.
4. Cutting parameters.
5. Maintenance of machines.

PROCESS FLOW AND PROCEDURE

Difference supplier will have difference process flow as long as final product appearance
same as drawing, but the cost and standard time will be difference when have a difference
process flow. Maximum profit and avoid losses is the nature of business operations. The
best process flow also will reduce error and mistake. Plan and provide the process flow to
customer in your technical report.

1.4 EQUIPMENTS

1. Aluminium bar
2. Lathe / turning machine
3. Power saw

1.5 SAFETY PROCEDURES

1. Always keep safety in mind.

2. Wear lab coat and safety shoes at all times.
3. Wear goggles when operating the machine.
4. Do not wear neckties, wristwatches, rings jewellery, etc. when operating the
machine. Long sleeve shirts will be rolled above the elbows.
5. The area surround the machine should be free of oil or coolant spills (avoid a
slippery floor) and as free as possible from obstruction. Keep the area clean at all
times.
1.6 PROJECT EVALUATION

The project will be evaluated based on;

1. Quality machined product (4.5%) (Refer Appendix B).

2. Lab report (4.5%)
a. Objective & Introduction (0.5%)
b. Machine parameter & material selection (0.7%)
c. Experimental procedure / process flow (0.5%)
