Task Title: Observation Task 2: Teaching A Phonics Lesson

The document summarizes an observation of a kindergarten phonics lesson on the sound "s". The teacher engaged the students by asking them to make the "ssss" sound like a snake and move their hands. They practiced words starting with "s" and the teacher demonstrated writing the letter "s". Students then participated in different learning activities to practice the sound and letter, such as tracing, coloring and writing the letter "s". The observer noted the students were engaged and enjoyed practicing the new sound.

Reflections on Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

1. What program is used in your school to teach phonics?

- The programs used in Al Darari kindergarten for kg2 students 4-6 years old are song

of sounds, showing pictures to students, they also use the multi-literacy to help assist

the students, such as functional user, meaning maker, critical analyser & transformer

methods.

2. How is phonics taught in your school?

- In Al Darari kindergarten phonics taught first by showing the students an item or a picture

that start with the sound theyre going to take, then they practice saying the sound and

some words, the teacher play the song of sounds song and focus on the part/ letter

theyre taking, ask the students to give her some words that start with that sound, help

them to find new words, sometimes she let them look for the letter in the class, she teaches

them how to write it and let them try writing it on the air/ floor/ board, then she give them

activities related to the letter such as tracing, colouring, matching, writing, cutting, etc.

sometimes she would have a story that have some words with the sound they had taken or

else she summarize the lesson and ask questions about the lesson what sound is this?

How do we write it? Give me words start with that sound, etc.

3. What was the focus of the lesson?

- Schools now around the world use the synthetic phonics approach which is much more

effective, teachers now a days focus on teaching the sound of the letter & by the end of

the semester students would be able to identify 44 phonemes and that one letter can sound

differently, that the letter s can sound like sss ce s, the letter i can sound like
eih ai i, and so on with other letters.

4. Were the learners engaged in the phonics lesson? If they were, select (a); if they were not, select (b).

a. Describe the different types of active engagement activities that the

teacher used.

- Some of the activities or engagement used in my class, were that when they take

a new sound the teacher I always try to make an action with the sound for

example, when sound ssss were taught the students would move their hands like

a snake while making the sound ssss, while teaching the sound puh would

give the students small papers to put it in front of their mouth and try saying the

sound puh and the paper would move a little, another activity that the students

enjoyed were colouring the letter, drawings start with that letter or designing the

letter with materials provided, also students enjoyed outdoors activities and they

should do more of that because it encourage their learning.

5. What types of activities did the children participate in during their independent centers that reinforced the lesson

objective/learning outcome? If they participated in learning centers, select (a); if they did not, select (b)

a) Describe the different types of learning center activities that the students

did.

- The teacher always would have a variety of activities during each lesson in

each center, such as writing the letters/ words, colouring the letter/ drawings,

matching the words with the pictures, making the letter with the playdough,
making the letter with the building blocks, searching for the letter in the class,

a game called (...something) hunter for example shape hunter letters

hunter words hunter etc. and they have to hunt the thing the teacher ask for,

if she asked for the sound a the student chosen have to find the sound a,

also complete the word activity _pple apple, there are always more types

of different activities that the teacher can use.
