PASALAMAT: A COLORFUL CELEBRATION AT THE HOME OF THE OLDEST

SUGAR MILLS IN NEGROS OCCIDENTAL

La Carlota City, located in the southwestern portion of Negros Occidental, is

home to the oldest sugar mills in the province. Majority of the land area is dedicated to

agriculture. The Pasalamat Festival is one of the grandest celebrations of La Carlota

City, Negros Occidental. From the name of the festival, pasalamat, it is the

townspeoples annual thanksgiving celebration set every last Sunday of the month of

April. The festival is an age-old ritual of the people of La Carlota thanking and giving

gifts to the agriculture god believed to live inside the volcano, Kanlaon. Now, through

the festival, it brings the people of La Carlota together thanking the God Almighty for all

the blessings received, giving them hope in spite of struggles and the gift of life. One of

the main attractions of the festival is the street dancing competition where everyone can

dance to the original Pasalamat Samba beat played live by the Pasalamat drumbeaters.
The rhythmic beat of the percussions, will surely make you sway your hips, thud and

stomp your feet. Multi-colored costumes made from home-grown resources worn by the

merrymakers also attract tourists.

Tarsier Sanctuary

The Philippine tarsier, (Tarsius syrichta or Carlito syrichta) is a very peculiar

small animal. In fact, it is one of the smallest known primates, no larger than an adult

men's hand. Mostly active at night, it lives on a diet of insects. Folk traditions sometimes

have it that tarsiers eat charcoal, but actually, they retrieve the insects from (sometimes

burned) wood. It can be found on the islands of Samar, Leyte, Bohol, and Mindanao in

the Philippines. In Bohol, deep in the secondary growth forest foothill of Corella town, in

the interior part of Bohol, is an institution dedicated to the preservation and scientific

researches on the endemic tarsier of Bohol. When I had the chance to visit the tarsier

sanctuary, I have observed that the area of the sanctuary is not that big and the

surroundings are very quiet since this animal is very sensitive and have a lot of anxiety

and might commit suicide. This sanctuary is one of the most visited tourist spots in

Bohol. As a tourist, my recommendation is, the place should be extended so that the

tourists would have a greater area to roam with. And on the entrance side, I recommend

that they should put benches there for the tourists so that they could have rest and time

to enjoy the view in the sanctuary. Rules inside the sanctuary should be strictly

regulated and implemented to achieve the goal of preserving the wildlife.
