Destiny Moments
Evangelist Jodi Lynn Hill
The Compassion Commission Definition: Compassion: to show mercy in the face of a need. Commission: The power or authority to execute certain duties (mission) entrusted (commit) to someone to be accomplished. Most call it the Great Commission, but I would rather call it the Compassion Commission, because it is literally committing acts of compassion that draws people to Jesus. Compassion is reaching out to the REAL needs of the people. Don’t be fooled into thinking that one hour per month will fulfill your quota of acts of kindness. What about meeting the everyday needs of the senior citizen down the street who can’t mow her lawn or shovel her walk, or has a hard time getting groceries herself? What of the children of single parent families who need the influence of the opposite sex parent? What of the poor family across the tracks that doesn’t have enough food and can’t find a job that will pay enough to live and provide for childcare? Take a look at the community around you. What are the needs that are staring you in the face? Are you really trying to reach out to PEOPLE or are you trying to put another notch in your Spiritual belt? You can talk about the love of Jesus all you want, but until put it into action, it is merely another random concept we use to convert people to the religion of Christianity. However, if people do see the love of Jesus through you, it draws them to want to begin a relationship with a loving Father who truly cares about their smallest needs. When we give out of unconditional love and compassion because we see a need, feel the need and ultimately meet the need…we open the door and make room to share the Word of God and be a complete witness for Christ. Sometimes we get so caught up in our Christian Catch Phrases, Spiritual Concepts, Religious Traditions and Charismatic Experiences that we are oblivious to the practical needs of those around us. I think we misinterpret Colossians 3:2 when it says to set your minds on things above, not on things of this earth. It doesn’t mean to stick your nose in the air. Yet, in my observation of most of the Church, that must be our interpretation since we don’t even notice the desperation of those lost in their sin and neediness. Perhaps you feel they deserve where they are, since “they got themselves into trouble.” The authority to share the Words of Jesus is established in our willingness and ability to show the deed regardless of the circumstance. Remember…faith without works is dead. So is LOVE! If I say I have the love of the Father but I do not follow his example of servitude, I am a liar and a hypocrite! (I John 4:20-21) Mark was a radical! All throughout his gospel, he reports many miracles of God’s power over disease, nature, demons and death. He establishes in chapter 16:14-20 that the authority Jesus had over all these things was given to us as believers. Once Jesus tells us to GO, He assures us that signs would follow and that miracles would confirm the words we speak. We need not worry about whether or not they would believe, rather whether you believe. The signs follow those who believe, not those who are trying to be convincing. If you truly believe, and do not doubt in your heart, whatever you ask, will be done. You don’t need to do any convincing. Let God do that. We believe--They believe. Signs and wonders to follow... If we truly believe in something or someone, that belief will radically affect every aspect of our lives. How we act, what we say and ultimately how we live. Jesus said to be hot or cold. Being lukewarm is more grotesque to God than even coldness. He would rather have you extremely hot or totally frozen. If you are lukewarm, God will “spew” you out of his mouth. (Spew literally means to vomit violently.) It absolutely disgusts him. It turns his stomach sour. A strong belief in something will affect how you interact with others and will eventually affect those with whom you interact. If you really believe in the ability of the love of Jesus to change people, your interaction with them will reflect that love. In return, they will respond to that love and begin to change. As they soften, you have the opportunity to share about this Jesus whom you believe enough to act like and, ultimately in the end, they are able to receive that love and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, because only a loving Lord would serve to such a capacity. Since you have displayed that same kind of love and servitude, they begin to learn, not only from Christ’s example, but from yours, as well. The pattern continues…love begets love. Go and do likewise!
