EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

To meet the requirement of the course outline as well as to comprehend the application of the
theoretical knowledge in the practical fields, the internship report on the topic “The nescient
steps of consumer banking along with performance evaluation of Foreign Exchange
Division of Mercantile Bank Ltd. (MBL)” has been prepared. The main focus point of the
project was to understand the activities of Foreign Exchange Operation of the Bank.

Motijheel branch of Mercantile Bank Ltd. Is most profitable branch. So Directors have to give
special importance and facilities for this branch. I am very lucky to do my internship in this
branch. Mercantile Bank Ltd. is scheduled commercial Bank registered by the Bangladesh
Bank. It is committed to conduct all banking and investment activities on the basis of interest-
free profit loss sharing systems. MBL follows the rules and regulation prescribed by the
Bangladesh Bank for scheduled commercial bank. The functions of the bank cover a wide
range of banking and functional activities to individuals, firms, corporate bodies etc. Banks
loans are greatly emphasized and it can be called the “Heart” of the bank because it is the
major source of bank’s income. It is very important to the national economy as a whole
because the expansion and condition of the bank loan affect the level of business activities to
different sectors to diversify its credit portfolio in compliance with credit policies of traders,
manufacturing processing plants and export industries and other business.

Banks remits money of the clients both in the country and outside the country by telex transfer,
pays order, demand draft etc. The bank has introduced a new money transfer service known as
Telegraphic Transfer.

The performance of the bank has been evaluated with respect to different performance
dimensions such as profitability operating efficiency, debt with respect to different dimension.
There are some internal and external factors that have too much influence on its performance.
After the completion of analysis, comments have been made on the performance of the bank in
various areas on the basis of the results found in the analysis.
