Prestressed Concrete Structures

The document outlines the course CE 411 on Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Design which covers topics like column, slab, and footing design, prestressing concepts, and analysis and design of determinate and continuous prestressed beams with exams and evaluations. It also discusses classification and design considerations for compression members like columns based on their length-to-breadth ratio and provides a design example for a short column with given dimensions and load.

Columns
Compression members are structural elements primarily
subjected to axial compressive forces.
Their design is guided by considerations of strength and
buckling.
Compression members are classified based on the Le/b
ratio. b is the least lateral dimension

Pedestal <=3 Short column >3 but < 12

Long or slender >=12

Design of short axially loaded columns
Factored concentric load applied on short tied columns is

Design example
Design the reinforcement for a column of length 2700 mm
and with dimensions of 250 mm x 300 mm to resist an
axial load of 1000 kN. Assume fck = 20 MPa and fy = 250
MPa. The column is fixed at both ends
