Mat1Cde ASSIGNMENT 5, 2017: TH TH TH

The document provides instructions for students to submit their solutions to Assignment 5 by the due date of October 16th. It notes that submissions should be a single PDF file uploaded through the LMS system. It emphasizes that pages should be clear and legible before scanning. The assignment is designed to help students master the course concepts and develop their mathematical communication skills. It contains 4 problems - the first asks students to evaluate integrals, the second asks students to identify properties of differential equations, the third asks students to solve initial value problems, and the fourth asks students about general and particular solutions to an initial value problem.

MAT1CDE ASSIGNMENT 5, 2017
Please upload your solutions to the LMS as a single PDF file before
2:00pm on Monday the 16th of October.
To do this, click on the assignment link and then click the Add submission button. Drag and
drop your file and click the Save changes button. Now click theSubmit assignment button, agree
that the work is your own by clicking the check-box and finally click Continue.
Note: Please make sure your pages are clear and legible before scanning. Do not submit pho-
tographs or folders (compressed or otherwise) as most, or all, the contents will be stripped in the
submission process. The university printers provide scanning options (Scan to me will scan and au-
tomatically email to your student email account) and there are also free scanning apps available for
most devices.

The assignments are designed to help you master the concepts in this subject and also for you to
develop your mathematical communication skills. Please note that often it is not the final answer
that is important but your mastery of the required techniques and the way you communicate your
ideas and your approach to the problems. Note that your use of language and mathematical symbols
are worth marks in the assignment.

1. Evaluate the following integrals (giving exact answers):

Z 2 Z /3
2 3
(a) x sin(x ) dx (b) x sin(3x) dx
0 0

2. (Exam style question.) For each of the following differential equations, enter the order and
tick the appropriate rectangles to indicate whether it is separable, linear, constant coefficient
or has none of these properties. Note:
(i) you are not required to solve these equations
(ii) some equations have more than one of the listed propertiesplace a X in all appropriate
places
(iii) You may enter your answers in the table below and include this sheet with your answers.

Differential Equation Order Separable Linear Constant None

Of the second order differential equations in the table, write down the homogeneous one in
standard form.
3. Solve the following initial value problems, and check your answers.

d2 y dy dy
(a) = 20y, with y = 19 and = 5 at x = 0.
dx2 dx dx
d2 y dy dy
(b) + 6 + 9y = 4e3x , with y = 1 and = 1 at x = 0.
dx2 dx dx
d2 y dy dy
(c) 4 + 5y = 0, with y = 5 and = 2 at x = 0.
dx2 dx dx
4. (Exam style question.) Consider the initial value problem y 00 + 4y = f (x) with y = 1 and
y 0 = 0 when x = 0. The general solution to the associated homogeneous equation, y 00 + 4y = 0,
is yh = c1 sin(2x) + c2 cos(2x).
In each of the following cases for f (x), state what you would try for the particular solution
(but do not solve for the unknown coefficient(s)).

(a) f (x) = 3ex (b) f (x) = sin(x) (c) f (x) = cos(2x) (d) f (x) = x3 x + 5
