Urbanization: If A Skyscraper Is Blocking A View That You Once Had From Your House
If a skyscraper is blocking a view that you once had from your house,
urbanization is happening. What is Urbanization? It refers to the shift from rural
to urban areas or the increase in the population of the people living in urban
areas and it results in the growth and expansion of a city. Its predominantly that
process that has brought out cities like Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, Delhi, Mumbai
and LA.
It has got many negative outcomes too. It has been found that urban population
consumes more food, energy and durable goods. The cost of living has increased
and agricultural productivity has decreased. Cities are turning into concrete
jungles. Overpopulation has caused accommodation and evolvement of slums.
Some urban cities have problems of unemployment or even underemployment.
People living in urban areas have generally serious health problems and are
stressed or even depressed and obese. Industrialization has increased pollution.
Forests are being cut for the expansions which have led in depletion of wildlife.
The urban lives can be compared with rural lives in contrast to their pros and
cons. The pros of urban cities are the cons of rural areas and vice versa. Village
culture is characterized by common bloodlines, intimate relationships, and
communal behavior whereas urban culture is characterized by distant bloodlines,
unfamiliar relations, and competitive behavior.
Even with all its pros and cons, cities are being urbanized. It is predicted that by
2050 about 64% of the developing world and 86% of the developed world will be
urbanized. Urbanization rates vary across the world. The United States and
United Kingdom have a far higher urbanization level than China and India, but a
far slower annual urbanization rate, since much less of the population is living in a
rural area.

Urbanization is often seen as a negative trend, with bad effects on quality of life and
the environment. But apartments require much less heat than houses, and commuting
by mass transit rather than cars can reduce pollution and energy use, and cities offer
improved opportunities for jobs (and often for education and housing as well), so city
growth doesn't make everyone unhappy.
Urban planning is a technical and political process concerned with the development and use of
land, protection and use of the environment, public welfare, and the design of the urban
environment, including air, water, and the infrastructure passing into and out of urban areas,
such as transportation, communications, and distribution networks
