STORY TELLING METHOD
INTRODUCTION:
Everyone loves a good story especially the young people we teach. In
fact, being able to tell a story in an interesting and compelling way is an important teaching skill.
This is because a good story is not only entertaining but is capable of holding student attention
while they learn important concepts, attitudes and skills. The ancient art of storytelling is
especially well-suited for student exploration. As a folk art, storytelling is accessible to all ages
and abilities. No special equipment beyond the imagination and the power of listening and
speaking is needed to create artistic images. As a learning tool, storytelling can encourage
students to explore their unique expressiveness and can heighten a student's ability to
communicate thoughts and feelings in an articulate, lucid manner. These benefits transcend the
art experience to support daily life skills.
DEFINITION:
Storytelling is the social and cultural activity of sharing stories, often with improvisation,
theatrics, or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of
entertainment, education, cultural preservation and instilling moral values.
OTHER DEFINITION:
Children have an innate love of stories. Stories create magic and a sense of wonder at the world.
Stories teach us about life, about ourselves and about others. Storytelling is a unique way for
students to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and can
promote a positive attitude to people from different lands, races and religions.
ADVANTAGES:
Storytelling and intercultural understanding. There are a number of
ways in which storytelling can enhance intercultural understanding and communication. Stories
can
DRAWBACKS:
1. Many teachers do not have experience with the technology used for teaching digital
storytelling. Teachers may need to attend workshops and specialized training may be required
before digital storytelling can be used. Also, some teachers have a difficult time figuring out how
to assess digital storytelling assignments.
2. It may be difficult to set up a time limit for the entire class to finish their projects. Some
students may grasp the idea and run with it while other students will take a longer time getting
used to the technology and the idea of not using pencil and paper to write stories. Teachers
should be flexible in these instances and open to project extensions.
3. Just like with other usages of technology, using digital storytelling can have technical
problems. If time is a factor, digital stories usually take longer to create than a traditional story.
Technology used to create digital stories is expensive. Some schools may not have the means to
provide such technology to every classroom.
4. Students may have troubles during the creation of their digital stories. Some issues that have
arisen include the following: trouble formulating a sound argument, they have less interest in the
actual storytelling, may only have limited access to the resources they need, there is limited
ability to save from the internet, it can be time consuming, and there can be copyright and
intellectual property issues.
5. Teachers are always receiving new training to acquire skills necessary to make their classroom
more suitable for upcoming generations of students. Digital storytelling training would not any
more complex than any other technology training. If digital storytelling is attributing to student
success and creativity, it should be implemented into school curriculums.
Recorded stories:
But any parent can preserve few stories for kids and spend a bit of time
for them to tell them stories. Most of the parents ignore the importance of storytelling and are
unaware of the advantages of storytelling. Let us see what all ways storytelling helps kids to
learn and grow.
All the television programs are designed for elder people, not for kids.
Children may lose thinking capacities and analyzing powers if they are exposed to television,
several hours a day. Children are slow to grasp and slow to think; thus they need entertainments
specially designed for them. Storytelling is an activity that can transfer emotions and feelings
and also can boost thinking capacity.
Infancy is the period when children absorb most of the words they use in the
future. Story telling also encourages children to participate actively in the learning process. It
can enhance the listening skills of children. Kids love to talk instead of listening to anything.
But this is not acceptable in the classrooms, thus storytelling gives them with the necessary
training to listen and understand instead of talking.
Parents need to take care of certain aspects when reading out stories for
children. If you want kids to listen actively and understand the story, you have to read out the
stories emotionally. Change the pitch of sound according to the feelings and emotions depicted
in the story. Use effective body language to convey ideas in the exact way. Perfect storytelling is
acting out a story. Storytelling parents are found to have more emotional bond with the children.
It teaches the children to be creative and make them dynamic thoughts and action.
(2) Myths:
(3) Legends:
Story-telling is an art and this method is a skillful teaching process. Success in this
method mostly depends on the competence of the teacher. Both selection of suitable stories and
their presentation in the classrooms are important. The former depends on the teacher's
knowledge as well as understanding and the latter depends on his skill in story-telling as well as
dramatization.
LIMITATIONS:
(1) It usually encourages exaggerations of facts which create misconception and wrong ideas in
the pupils.
(2) It sometimes minimizes the importance of personalities and shows even the historical
characters as mythical and frivolous.
(3) The story-telling method is not found suitable for teaching history to the students of higher
classes.
Most stories do not possess all seven qualities. Because high concept develops
along a continuum, a high-concept story may be strongly identifiable by two of the qualities, or
may more vaguely possess five of these traits. The more of them you can identify in your story,
the higher the concept. Having just one quality out of seven does not necessarily mean that you
dont have a high-concept idea; it just means that your storys potential to appeal to high-
concept markets (or to gatekeepers who specify that they are seeking high-concept work) might
be softer than other stories that possess multiple qualities from the list. When the idea of high
concept is put in the context of these seven qualities, it becomes easier to see how commercially
appealing books have a clear line of demarcation. That line is the high concept.
With that in mind, lets look more closely at each of these qualities to get a
better idea of what they mean.
People often use the term interchangeably with words such as fresh, new,
innovative, novelbut what does it really mean to be original? Think of originality as approach-
centric. Your storys idea may be centered in a familiar context, but your approach to that idea
comes from an unexpected angle. For example, Mary Shelleys Frankenstein took a familiar
ideaevil monster terrorizes humansand added an original take: The monster and humans
switch moral ground and the humans terrorize the monster. Originality is more about finding
new ways to present the familiar than it is about inventing something thats entirely unlike
anything thats ever been done before (a nearly impossible feat).
4. Highly Visual:
High-concept stories have a visual quality about them that is palpable. When
you read or hear about a high-concept story, your mind starts conjuring images and you can see
the story unfold. High-concept books tend to make for great film adaptations, and this is
why. Books with cinematic imagery are almost always high-concept stories
As with imagery, high-concept stories spark emotion, but not just any
emotion. Usually its a primal emotional response: fear, joy, hate, love, rage. There is no wishy-
washy emotional engagement of the reader. The involvement is strong, immediate and intense.
Its important to remember that this list of high-concept qualities is not some
sliding scale of good or bad, or an attempt to judge your work as worthy or unworthy of
submissionquite the contrary. Your submission will be considered based on many factors, and
in fact, there are plenty of good agents and publishers who dont specify a preference for high-
concept work in their guidelines. This list simply presents an effective tool for helping you to
know with confidence that you are positioning your writing appropriately, with the right
potential representatives, in the right markets. In a submissions process that can often feel like a
guessing game, understanding what high concept means, and honestly assessing how closely
your work fits that description, can eliminate much of that guesswork and set you up for
submission success.
ART OF STORY TELLING :
A good and well-presented story is successful in reaching its objective and
remembered long after over others. Reaching its listeners, holding the interest and crossing all
age barriers is the impact of an effective storytelling. Knowing and applying the art of
storytelling will not only strengthen your stories, but also develop the desired interest in the
audience.
To improve on your storytelling skills, one should prepare beforehand. After
settling down on a story, spend a considerable period of time on it. Read the story several times,
with concentration. Pay attention on its background and cultural meanings. Explore its appeal,
the mood you want to create and the word pictures you would want your listeners to see, and the
mood you wish to create. The characters and setting should become as real to you as people and
places you know. Visualize it completely with sounds, tastes, scents, and colors.
The art of Storytelling reflects the use of the story to paint word pictures, using
the sound, rhythm and repetition of words. One should learn the story as a whole, always
knowing the first and last lines by heart!. The beginning of the story should set the stage,
introducing the characters and. It should be kept in mind to not to alter the essential story line
while simplifying or adapting a story. One should not lose the original flavor and essence of the
story. Even when narrating an old and well known story, one can use their imagination to make
the story come across as fresh and alive, using your imagination.
COMPARISON OF STORYTELLING:
Storytelling method is a art if teacher know is trained or know this art so he or she can easily
delivered this method and made their lecture or lesson easy, interesting or effective.
At international level teachers are highly qualified and trained so they easily delivered
their lesson to the students. And they made their lecture more interesting and entertaining. They
use different strategies or different methods of storytelling like: story with clues, with charts,
with pictures, with singing style and through puppets. Using this methods stories become more
effective and students take more interest.
On the other hand. At national level teachers do not trained. They dont know the right method o
storytelling; through this students dont take much interest. Teachers dont use different methods
of storytelling. They just stand and tell the stories to children.
This method becomes more effective when teachers know the right way of conveying. Otherwise
it will not.
ANALYSIS:
As we know that there are different teaching methods. But we all analyze
that storytelling method is a more interesting and effective method of teaching. Students take
more interest as compare to other methods. Learning becomes more interesting and more
creative through this method. This method is more beneficial for primary students and also
beneficial or effective method for young children. Because every child want some interesting
things. Through this they can easily learn because entertaining things develop interest among
them.
CONCLUSION:
I concluded that story telling method is an effective method for teaching. Through
story telling students learn fast and easily. Students show their interest towards entertainment and
storytelling is an entertaining method thats why teacher used this method. Students skills,
characteristics and personality nourish through storytelling. This method is widely used for pre-
primary or primary children. Storytelling has many benefits like: develop interest, nourish
personality of a student, enhance skills, develop confidence, develop communication skills etc.
on the other hand it has many drawbacks. Like sometimes teachers do not trained, they do not
know how to tell a story. Through this students cant take interest and learning become effective.
Storytelling based on three types which are: True Stories which are true and real stories, Myths
which based ion imagination and last is Legends which based on little truth or imagination also.
Storytelling is beneficial when it used in a proper manner. Storytelling is an effective method.
