Homework Task- Poster Design Analysis

Due Friday, Week 6

The purpose of this task is for you to gain a deeper understanding of design terminology through the
process of analysing a poster design.

Task: You are to write a 200-400 word analysis of the movie poster design attached. Remember to use
design terminology from the Design Elements and Principles Handout. See below for the structure of a
design analysis.

State what kind of design it is (product, architectural, graphic) and what it is (book cover, poster,
ticket, cd cover).
State who the audience/ consumer/ market would be for this design.
Describe the design in parts, e.g. typography, images, colour, focal point, overall composition, etc.
Analyse the design in terms of design elements and principles (refer to the Design Elements and
Principles Handout):
-What is the posters purpose? E.g. The poster is advertising high quality, low priced footwear.
-What colours have been used? Is it monochromatic or polychromatic?
-How do these colours contrast or complement one another? Does this impact on the overall
design? Explain.
-What is the key image used within the poster?
-How does the font (typography) impact on the overall design?
-Explain the composition (layout) of the overall design. Why do you think the design has been set
out this way?
-How has the designer used positive and negative space? How does this create balance within the
design?
Give your opinion of the design:
-What do you like in the design? Explain.
-What do you dislike in the design? Explain.
