How can mathematics teachers create

learning environments that foster inclusion?

Implement strategies within your mathematics curriculum that encourages students to bring math home
and out into the community with them. Developed in South Australia, the Learning Inclusion Program
included 44 primary schools and used strategies such as board game creation, learning trails, and family
math challenges to promote inclusion.

and Interventions: Some of the Teaching and Learning Resources Developed By Teachers in the
Mathematics for Learning Inclusion Program. Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, 13(4), 28-
32.

Research shows that there is a significant positive correlation with expressive communication and an
inclusive classroom setting. Additionally, when determining whether a student is receiving meaningful
learning opportunities, teachers must consider not only the what of the curriculum, but also the how.

Implications for General Curriculum Access. Exceptional Children, 81(3), 312-328.

Research shows that students who are included in the general education classroom show greater
improvement with both independence and social skills than their peers who are taught in self-contained
settings.

Citation: Fisher, M., & Meyer, L. (2002). Development and social competence after two years for
students enrolled in inclusive and self-contained educational programs. Research and Practice in Severe
Disabilities, 27, 165174. doi:10.2511/ rpsd.27.3.165

Research drawing on the expectancy-value model suggests that students who do exceptionally well in
math settings and who have positive values regarding math are more likely to pursue careers within the
math field. Give your students the opportunity to explore numerous concepts within the math field.

the Links Between Classroom Environment, Motivational Beliefs, and Interests. Developmental
Psychology, 48(6), 1643-1657. doi:10.1037/a0027247

Behavior is a common trait that students with disabilities need to improve upon in an inclusion
classroom setting. To help students stay on task and to prepare them to respond in the future, behavior-
specific praise statements (BSPS) can be an effective teaching strategy.

Performance Feedback on Behavior-Specific Praise in Inclusion Classrooms. Education & Treatment Of
